Pickup trucks are a unique segment in Vietnam, with the market leader, Ford Ranger, dominating with an impressive 80% market share. This leaves other competitors, such as the Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota Hilux, vying for second place.
These two Japanese models offer distinct value propositions, with the Mitsubishi Triton highly regarded for its off-road capabilities. However, the Triton has been showing signs of losing its stronghold on the second spot in monthly sales since the introduction of the 2024 Hilux.
With the launch of the new-generation Triton on September 11, there are high hopes for a turnaround. The 2024 model is expected to boost sales and reclaim market share from its rival. Mitsubishi has ambitious plans for the Triton, equipping it with new features to compete with the segment leader, the Ranger.
The Mitsubishi Triton 2024 continues to be imported from Thailand. It is available in three variants, with retail prices ranging from 655 million to 924 million VND.
Bold and Robust Exterior Design
In the context of pickup trucks becoming a popular choice for enthusiasts in Vietnam, the exterior design plays a crucial role in influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions. The new-generation Mitsubishi Triton boasts a completely different look to cater to its customers’ tastes.
Thanks to its new platform, which is larger than its predecessor, the Mitsubishi Triton 2024 showcases a more liberated design language. The Japanese automaker has adopted angular lines, giving the truck a more robust and muscular stance.
The Mitsubishi Triton 2024 has dimensions of 5,360 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,815 mm in height.
Opinions on its aesthetics may vary, with some preferring the looks of the previous generation. However, the new design language gives the Triton a more formidable presence, matching the Ranger’s stature.
It features LED projector headlights and LED fog lights.
The top-spec Mitsubishi Triton 2024 rides on stylish 18-inch alloy wheels.
Due to its longer wheelbase of 3,130 mm, the Triton 2024’s turning radius has increased from 5.9 m to 6.2 m.
Modern and Feature-Rich Interior
The interior of the Triton 2024 has undergone a complete transformation, featuring a new design language with angular elements that emphasize its rugged character. Behind the steering wheel sits a new 7-inch LCD display that provides detailed vehicle information, while a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is prominently positioned in the center.
The A-pillars remain relatively thick, slightly limiting outward visibility.
The steering wheel is equipped with a full suite of buttons, and the control cluster on the left includes a convenient scroll wheel.
The Triton 2024 features a new, informative LCD display.
The infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a touchscreen interface, and a volume knob for easy adjustment.
The top-spec variant is equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, although the temperature adjustment dials are less practical than a rotary knob setup.
Wireless phone charging, a first for the Triton, helps it match the Ranger in terms of convenience features. However, the Triton still utilizes traditional handbrakes instead of the electronic parking brakes found in its American rival.
Below the gear lever is a rotary dial for the four-wheel-drive system, which includes a differential lock.
The Triton 2024’s seats are upholstered in a combination of leather and fabric, with the top-spec variant offering a two-tone color scheme. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable in eight ways, while the passenger seat remains manually adjustable.
It comes equipped with both USB-A and USB-C charging ports.
While the second-row seats don’t recline as much as the previous generation, they offer thicker cushioning for a more comfortable off-road experience.
Powerful Performance and Off-Road-Focused Suspension
Under the hood of the top-spec variant, the Mitsubishi Triton 2024 is powered by a new 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission and Super Select 4WD-II active all-wheel drive, it delivers 201 horsepower and a maximum torque of 470 Nm.
The Triton 2024’s engine bay features a thick layer of rubber insulation, enhancing its soundproofing capabilities.
While these figures fall short of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak’s 207 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, the new engine in the Triton is a significant upgrade. In our test drive, we found the power-to-weight ratio to be satisfactory.
The engine and transmission respond adequately to initial throttle inputs, and thanks to its twin-turbocharged technology, lag is minimal. At higher speeds (above 80 km/h), the Triton 2024 still feels punchy, but the automatic transmission tends to upshift slowly.
The top-spec Triton 2024 is equipped with electric power steering, providing a more relaxed driving experience compared to the lower variants.
The suspension of the Triton 2024 has been improved, but it may not appeal to those who primarily use their vehicles on paved roads or for cargo transportation. The adjustments are geared more towards off-road performance, providing a smoother ride over rough terrain.
During our off-road test, the Triton 2024 effortlessly navigated rocky paths, potholes, and speed bumps, thanks to its renowned Super Select 4WD-II active all-wheel-drive system, which was already impressive in the previous generation. The suspension offers a long travel distance, and the well-padded seats further reduce the impact on the occupants’ backs.
However, on paved roads, the suspension feels less planted due to its softer setup. While it doesn’t cause a bouncy or uncomfortable ride, it may be a drawback for those who don’t intend to go off-roading.
Who Is the Mitsubishi Triton 2024 For?
With its focus on off-road capabilities, the target audience for the new Triton remains unchanged. It caters to those who require a pickup truck for cargo transportation or those who enjoy the thrill of conquering challenging terrain.
However, the Triton also offers a compelling package for those considering a pickup truck as a lifestyle choice. The controversial new design still has a strong road presence, and its turning radius, despite increasing slightly, is still tighter than its competitors, making it more maneuverable in urban environments.
Additionally, the Triton is no longer lacking in features. The top-spec variant now includes an advanced driver-assistance systems package, incorporating modern safety features such as forward-collision warning and mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert.
All these features are offered at a price of 924 million VND, which is significantly lower than the Ford Ranger Wildtrak (979 million VND) and the Toyota Hilux Adventure (999 million VND).
