Italian Automaker Stellantis to Halt Production of the Fiat 500e Electric Car for Four Weeks Due to Low Demand in the European Market
Despite electric vehicle sales continuing to rise globally, sales are not keeping pace with the initial growth plans of automakers. As a result, many brands have had to reconsider their electric vehicle development plans, while also accelerating ICE (internal combustion engine) projects that had been put on hold and temporarily ceasing the production of electric cars.
According to a report from Reuters, Italian automaker Stellantis has announced that it will temporarily halt operations at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, which produces the Fiat 500e electric car for four weeks. Stellantis told Reuters that this measure is necessary as there are not enough orders within and outside Europe to maintain production from the Italian plant.
Currently, the Fiat 500e is only produced at the Mirafiori plant. This is the birthplace of the Fiat brand, and it is also an area where the Italian National Labor Federation has frequently received complaints from workers about wanting to produce a model with higher production volume and more affordable prices instead of just the Fiat 500e. So, Stellantis will invest $110 million in this plant and plans to produce a hybrid version of the Fiat 500e to increase production.
According to Insideevs, while demand for electric vehicles is waning significantly, one of the reasons for the low sales of the Fiat 500e is that Stellantis has not made this model attractive enough.
In Italy, the standard Fiat 500e has an output of 93 horsepower and is equipped with a small 24 kWh battery, selling for €29,950 (~814 million VND). Meanwhile, the MG4, which is slightly more expensive at €31,970 (~869 million VND), offers a 51 kWh battery and 168 horsepower. Similarly, the Peugeot e-208 and Fiat 600e, which have a similar price difference, have almost double the power and range. From this, it can be understood that, in the position of a user faced with many choices of electric car models in the same price range, the Fiat 500e will not be a prominent name. The weakness of the Fiat 500e is its high price. If Fiat wants to increase sales, they need to find a way to lower the price of the car.
