Before acquiring the Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition, a special edition launched in 2017 as part of the limited-edition annual Heritage Edition series, Dang Le Nguyen Vu already owned a standard Ford GT. Each year, Ford pays homage to the wins of its predecessor, the Ford GT40, at the Le Mans races in the 1960s with new generations of the Ford GT.
Both Ford GTs were uncrated together, but the standard model went through customs faster. It sports a deep red exterior and joined Vu’s car collection in May 2022, almost a year after the arrival of the Heritage Edition. This addition to Vu’s fleet cost him hundreds of billions of dong and included the Ford GT, Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, and Ferrari F8 Spider.
It wasn’t until the Gumball 3000 2024 supercar event in Vietnam the following week that the standard Ford GT supercar, valued at millions of dollars, made its public debut. It will be a long time before this car reappears at another Trung Nguyen Legend event or, if luck permits, on the city streets.
Compared to its deep red color upon arrival, the second-generation Ford GT now sports a more attractive livery. The main body is painted in emerald green with white stripes, contrasting with the white and emerald green of the limited-edition Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition, of which only 39 exist globally.
Ford initially planned to produce only 250 units of the second-generation GT, making it highly exclusive and coveted by collectors. The public debut of the second-generation Ford GT took place at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and the launch of the Forza Motorsport 6 racing game in 2015, with production slated for 2016, a decade after the first generation ended.
This car marked the 50th anniversary of the GT40’s victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and competed successfully at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans to commemorate the occasion, winning the LM GTE-Pro class and taking first and third places.
The design of the new GT started with its aerodynamics, with the design team’s ultimate goal of creating a successful Le Mans racing car. Low drag and aerodynamic efficiency were paramount in the development of the car’s exterior, leading the designers to pursue a ‘teardrop’ shape similar to LMP1 cars.
As a result, the powertrain of the new GT took a back seat to the car’s exterior design and aerodynamic efficiency. While a V8 or even a V12 engine was considered, the team ultimately chose Ford’s EcoBoost V6 for the freedom it offered to designers due to its compact size.
The intention behind the design was for the overall appearance of the second-generation Ford GT to be recognizable as part of the GT lineage, hence the truncated front end, round taillights, and dual exhaust tips. There were no explicit requirements for luxury or practicality in the design of this road-going car, explaining the minimal luggage space and spartan interior. The seat position inside is fixed to provide more room for the body and teardrop-shaped exterior.
Like its predecessor, the new Ford GT is only available as a 2-door coupe with a mid-engine layout, intended to improve stability by keeping the center of gravity low and near the middle. The weight distribution of the new GT is 43% front and 57% rear. Unlike the first generation, the new GT features butterfly doors that do not include a section integrated into the roof.
The highlight of the standard Ford GT owned by “Qua” Vu is its dual-spoke carbon fiber rims, a rather expensive option that adds personality to the new Ford GT of the owner of the only Bugatti Veyron in the S-shaped land. However, this option increases the car’s weight by 1 kg compared to aluminum rims.
Complementing the 20-inch rims are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, measuring 245/35 at the front and 325/30 at the rear. The braking system consists of ventilated carbon-ceramic discs produced by Brembo, with 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear.
The new Ford GT supercar is powered by a 3.5-liter Ford EcoBoost V6 engine with twin-turbochargers, producing a maximum output of 647 horsepower and 746 Nm of torque. For cars produced from 2020 onwards, this engine’s output has been increased to 660 horsepower.
This potent engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling the new Ford GT to sprint from 0 to 97 km/h in just 3 seconds and reach a top speed of 348 km/h. This supercar has also been fitted with an Akrapovic exhaust system.
Production of the new Ford GT supercar began in December 2016 and ended in 2022, with an estimated total production volume of 1,350 units, averaging 225 cars sold per year.
