The influence of the 7th lunar month and the impact of Vietnamese consumers’ psychology of waiting for the reduction in registration fees were evident in many car segments in the past August, especially in the D-segment sedan. In August 2024, no D-segment sedan model sold 100 cars, including the “segment king” Toyota Camry.

D-segment sedan sales table in August 2024 (unit: cars)
Toyota Camry: 65 cars
The decline in Toyota Camry’s performance is the clearest evidence that D-segment sedans are being turned away by Vietnamese consumers. In the past August, this Toyota model sold only 65 cars, down 49.6%. This is probably one of the rare times that Toyota Camry has not sold 100 cars in a month in the Vietnamese market. However, the number 1 position in the D-segment sedan segment still belongs to this model.
Toyota Camry
Toyota Camry is currently distributed in Vietnam with 4 versions and prices ranging from VND 1,105 billion to VND 1,495 billion. The price is not cheap, lacking promotional programs, plus the fact that the car has not been upgraded in terms of design and equipment for a long time, has made Toyota Camry’s sales decrease. As an imported car from Thailand, Camry also does not benefit from the state’s 50% reduction in registration fees.
According to information from dealers, the 2025 Toyota Camry will be officially launched in the Vietnamese market in December this year. Sales consultants at dealers said that the car will cut the 2.5Q gasoline engine version and increase the number of hybrid versions from 1 to 2.
The hybrid version of this model will be equipped with a 2.5L 4-cylinder gasoline engine, 1 electric motor, e-CVT automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. In total, the 2025 Toyota Camry hybrid version has a capacity of 230 horsepower.
Meanwhile, the standard version of the 2025 Toyota Camry still uses a 2.0L gasoline engine. This engine is likely to be carried over from the previous generation. The engine delivers a maximum power of 170 horsepower and a maximum torque of 206 Nm. The power is transmitted to the wheels through a CVT automatic transmission.
In addition to changes in versions and engines, the 2025 Toyota Camry also has improved design and convenience equipment. The selling price of the car is expected to increase compared to before.
Mazda6: 42 cars
Mazda6 is the only model in the D-segment sedan segment that did not decrease in sales in the past August. In fact, the car’s sales remained the same as in July 2024, stopping at 42 vehicles. At the same time, Mazda6 also continues to be the second best-selling model in the D-segment sedan segment in Vietnam.
Mazda6
Mazda6 is currently the cheapest D-segment sedan in Vietnam with prices ranging from VND 779 million to VND 914 million. Although cheap, the car is not very popular. The reason is partly due to the fact that the car has not had an upgraded version for a long time.
In addition to its competitive price, the Mazda6 also boasts a beautiful design, full convenience and safety equipment. The car is equipped with a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights, lane departure warning, radar cruise control, collision warning, smart front/rear brake support, lane-keeping assist, driver attention alert, and smart brake support (SBS).
The Mazda6 in Vietnam currently has 2 engine options. The first is the SkyActiv-G 2.0 gasoline engine with a maximum output of 154 horsepower and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The two corresponding figures of the SkyActiv-G 2.5 gasoline engine are 188 horsepower and 252 Nm. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Kia K5: 14 cars
Similar to its competitors in the segment, the Kia K5’s sales are not very promising in August 2024. This model sold only 14 cars in August, down 65.8%. With this result, Kia K5 once again made it to the top 10 worst-selling cars in the Vietnamese market.
Kia K5
The Kia K5 is a D-segment sedan with a quite reasonable price, ranging from VND 859 million to VND 999 million. In addition, the car also has advantages such as youthful and sporty design, relatively abundant convenience and safety equipment.
When buying this model, Vietnamese customers will receive equipment such as LED lights, electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, electrically adjustable passenger seat, head-up display (HUD), 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch central touch screen, Bose 12-speaker audio system, 2-zone automatic air conditioning, panoramic sunroof, remote engine start, and wireless phone charging.
Under the hood of this Korean car are 2 engine options. The first is the 2.0L Nu MPI engine, producing a maximum output of 150 horsepower and a maximum torque of 192 Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second is the 2.5L Theta-III GDi engine, producing a maximum output of 191 horsepower and a maximum torque of 246 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Honda Accord: 3 cars
“Old story”, Honda Accord continues to rank last in the D-segment sedan segment and is in the top 10 worst-selling cars in the whole market in August 2024. The model’s sales reached only 3 units, down 50%.
Honda Accord
In the past few months, Honda has continuously reduced cash by up to VND 220 million for the Accord but has not been able to save the model’s sales. In September 2024, the Honda Accord continues to apply the above promotion program.
The Honda Accord in Vietnam only has 1 version and a starting price of up to VND 1,319 billion. In addition, the car has also not been renewed in terms of design and equipment for a long time, so it is less attractive in the eyes of Vietnamese consumers.
Of course, the Honda Accord does have its strengths. This model is highly appreciated for its interior space and driving feel. Accord’s “heart” is a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that delivers a maximum output of 188 horsepower and a maximum torque of 260 Nm. Accompanying the engine is a CVT automatic transmission with 2 driving modes: Eco and Sport.
In addition, the Honda Accord also has safety features such as collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control including low-speed range, automatic adaptive headlight system, lane departure reduction system, and lane-keeping assist system.
