According to Drive, Mazda is reportedly gearing up for a logo refresh. Specifically, the Japanese automaker has filed for a trademark of a new logo, described as a sharper, more basic black-and-white version of its current 3D logo.

The iconic V-shaped wing logo that Mazda has been using since its introduction in 1997 has undergone a few updates over the years, with a total of three different variations to date.

Accompanying the new logo, Drive reports that the brand name will also undergo a change, with all letters capitalized and a new font style. This new font will be similar to the one used for the Mazda Foundation, Mazda Driving Academy, and the logo on the rear of models like the Mazda3.

The wordmark “Mazda” has been consistently formatted since 1975, with “m” and “a” in lowercase and “d” and “z” in uppercase. Notably, the “z” has been designed with a metal-cut style.

It remains unclear whether Mazda will be updating its entire brand identity or if this new logo will be specific to certain divisions of the company. A spokesperson from Mazda Australia declined to comment when asked by Drive.

As stated on Mazda’s website, the V-shaped wing symbol on the logo represents the company’s pursuit of “continuous improvement to drive powerful growth” and signifies “flexible thinking, creativity, vitality, and resilience.”
