According to a report released by the National Transportation Safety Committee, it took approximately 190,000 liters of water and 14-15 hours to extinguish the blaze when the 2024 Tesla Semi caught fire.
According to details from the investigators, the 2024 Tesla Semi was involved in an accident on Interstate 80 in Placer County, California, in the early hours of August 19. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that the tractor-trailer, driven by a Tesla employee, veered off the road while ascending a curve and struck a barrier.
The 2024 Tesla Semi then struck a tree and continued down the embankment, coming to rest against several trees, according to the NTSB. The report stated that the vehicle’s battery pack caught fire after the impact, not before.
Investigators said it took approximately 190,000 liters of water to extinguish the blaze. Cal Fire aircraft were also deployed to drop fire retardant around the area as a precautionary measure to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent areas.
According to the NTSB, it took 14 hours to reopen the westbound lane and 15 hours for the eastbound lane. Fortunately, the driver of the Tesla Semi was not injured in the accident.
The Semi 2024 was equipped with Tesla’s Advanced Driver Assistance System, although the NTSB report stated that the system was not engaged and the driver was unable to use it at the time of the accident. The system, which Tesla refers to as “Autopilot,” is designed to reduce the driver’s workload by using external cameras to match the speed of surrounding vehicles and assist in lane keeping. Tesla states that the system is designed for “driver-supervised” driving and is not intended to make the vehicle autonomous.
The NTSB is still investigating the cause of the fire.
