Get Ready for the All-Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Coming Soon to Southeast Asia
Mark your calendars, as the highly anticipated all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class is set to make its debut in Thailand in October 2024. Officially named the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, this SUV is ready to impress.
Since it’s an imported model, you can expect the design and features of the G580 in Thailand to be quite similar to its international counterparts.
The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology boasts impressive dimensions with a length of 4,624 mm, a width of 1,931 mm, a height of 1,986 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. Compared to its gasoline-powered sibling, this electric SUV is 253 mm shorter but 11 mm taller, with all other specifications remaining unchanged.
In terms of exterior design, the G 580 retains the iconic boxy and robust shape of the G-Class, but with a modern twist. It features a closed-off grille with illuminated trim, a design element inherited from the EQG concept unveiled in 2021. The SUV also sports a raised bonnet and additional air vents in the wheel arches to enhance aerodynamics.
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz G 580 mirrors that of its gasoline-powered counterpart, offering a host of impressive features. These include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster seamlessly integrated with a 11.6-inch central touchscreen, rear-seat entertainment screens, and ambient lighting. The SUV also comes equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 is powered by four electric motors, delivering a combined output of approximately 588 horsepower and a staggering 1,164 Nm of torque. All that power is sent to all four wheels, enabling the SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.
The lithium-ion battery pack has a capacity of 116 kWh, providing an impressive range of up to 473 kilometers on a single charge, according to the WLTP cycle. And when you need to recharge, the integrated fast-charging system can add 170 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.
As a true off-road-focused SUV, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 comes loaded with advanced driving assistance systems. It boasts a unique double-wishbone front suspension and a rigid axle rear suspension, meticulously engineered by Mercedes-Benz to enhance road grip. The G 580 also introduces the innovative G-turn mode, allowing the SUV to turn 90 degrees in just one second, complete a 360-degree turn in five seconds, and even perform consecutive double turns. This technology proves invaluable when navigating tight spaces or dealing with challenging terrain.
Mercedes has also ensured that the electric G-Class can tackle water crossings with ease, capable of wading through up to 850 mm of water, which is 150 mm more than the G550 and G63. With a ground clearance of 249 mm, approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 30.7 degrees respectively, and a breakover angle of 20.3 degrees, the G 580 can climb slopes of up to 45 degrees.
While the pricing for the Thai market is yet to be announced, in Germany, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology starts at 142,621 Euros (approximately 3.91 billion VND).
