A Classic 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is Nothing But a Pile of Scrap, Yet a Certain Detail Makes Its Selling Price Astonishing.

This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster convertible is currently sitting in an old warehouse, and from the images, one can see that its condition is nothing short of a pile of scrap. However, on October 26th, this convertible will be auctioned off in Los Angeles, California, USA, as part of RM Sotheby’s junk car collection auctions.

According to The Sun, the car will have a starting price of up to £750,000, equivalent to approximately 24.3 billion VND. This price has surprised many as the car’s current state seems … undeserving. So, what has led to this astonishing starting price for the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster?

The answer lies in the fact that this 67-year-old classic Mercedes-Benz is one of only 30 cars worldwide to feature the highly coveted and rare Rudge wheels, often sought after for competitions. These wheels are mostly found in private collections and rarely come up for sale. Additionally, the 300 SL Roadster convertible itself was only produced globally from 1957-1963, with just under 1,000 units made. Despite its age, this particular car has only clocked approximately 17,702 km, according to Luxury Auto News.

Originally, this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster was finished in a distinctive fire engine red exterior with a cream-colored leather interior. Under the hood lies a six-cylinder engine, capable of delivering an impressive 225 horsepower in its prime.

However, the car is currently suffering from rust almost entirely on the body, with one headlight and mirror missing, a damaged grille, flat tires, a degraded engine, and severely torn and dilapidated seats. As such, the future owner of this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster will need to invest significant time and money to restore it to its former glory.
