On July 25, 2024, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, a BYD Atto 3 electric car suddenly caught fire while plugged into a fast charger.

According to a post on the Team-BHP forum, the BYD Atto 3 experienced a safety issue, particularly with its fuse, which led to the fire. However, the power did not cut off automatically during the incident, forcing the owner to intervene by pressing the Emergency Stop Device (ESD) button on the charging station to minimize damage.

Immediately after the incident, the BYD Atto 3 owner notified BYD India and the dealer, EVM Autokraft in Kochi. However, both parties failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and denied the car’s warranty, even though the owner had purchased it less than a month ago.

It is understood that the BYD Atto 3 owner works in the energy industry and has a good understanding of electricity. He confidently asserted that the responses from EVM Autokraft, Kochi, and BYD India were unconvincing. He believes that the company should respect the owner’s warranty rights, compensate for the damage caused by the incident, and ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future by implementing higher safety measures and enhancing quality control, rather than denying responsibility.

Many people expressed their dissatisfaction with the company’s actions in the comments section of the owner’s forum post. Some questioned why the power did not cut off when the charging gun became loose. BYD should have a safety mechanism in place to ensure the safety of its users and only allow electricity to flow when the charging gun is properly plugged in.

In fact, this is not the first case of a BYD Atto 3 catching fire while fast-charging. Previously, in September 2023, another Atto 3 caught fire during DC fast-charging outside a supermarket in Thailand. Fortunately, the authorities arrived in time to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading.
