In a surprising turn of events, Mazda was recently sued by a man seeking $5 million in compensation as his daughter was involved in an accident while driving their CX-50.
Joshua M., who purchased the Mazda CX-50 in May 2024, encountered issues when his daughter attempted to start the vehicle. As she pressed the Start/Stop button, the screen instructed her to “Press brake to start.” She complied and shifted the car from P (Park) to D (Drive).
However, instead of moving forward, the car suddenly reversed. Despite her efforts to control the vehicle, neither the power-assisted brakes nor the power steering responded. The CX-50 only came to a halt when it collided with a tree.
Following the incident, Joshua M. filed a lawsuit against Mazda, claiming that their instruction to “press brake to start” was confusing and unclear. He argued that the company should update their information and provide detailed responses to customers.
In response, Mazda asserted that the CX-50 was functioning normally and that there were no issues with the braking or power steering systems.
On social media platforms, some people speculated that the incident was due to the driver’s lack of experience or insufficient force applied to the brake pedal during the simultaneous pressing of the Start/Stop button.
