The Ford Territory is a special model for Ford Vietnam, differing from the Ranger and Everest in that it falls under the ‘Smart’ category rather than the ‘Tough’ pillar. This C-SUV model is the first of its kind for the American automaker, featuring a unique design that appeals to younger customers. With a well-oriented marketing strategy and a favorable balance between price and equipment, the Territory quickly gained the favor of Vietnamese users upon its launch in October 2022.
From the beginning of 2024 up until now, the Ford Territory has consistently maintained its position as the second best-selling model in the C-SUV segment, capturing nearly 16% of the market share.
In preparation for the milestone of 15,000 units delivered to customers since its launch (expected in September 2024), Ford Vietnam recently organized a journey called “Discover Territory – Continuing the Legacy,” aiming to introduce new values to younger customers.
During this event, we had the opportunity to meet Vo Diep Phuoc Chau, a 27-year-old information technology engineer from Ho Chi Minh City, who currently owns a Territory Titanium edition. Below are some of Chau’s insights and experiences with this popular American car brand.
Chau is one of the three administrators of the Ford Territory Owners Saigon group.
– Hi Chau! Why did you choose the Ford Territory as your companion, when there are so many other options in the C-SUV segment?
The Ford Territory is my fourth car; previously, I owned several sedans. However, due to the nature of my work, I needed to travel almost 100 kilometers every day, sharing the road with many trucks and containers. So, my priorities shifted towards an SUV for a safer and more comfortable driving experience.
It was around the Tet holiday in 2023 when I first noticed a Ford Territory on the road. As it had just been released in late 2022, it was a rare sight, and the first impressions it left on me were strong.
“Wow! A new Ford model that’s beautiful, spacious, and looks sturdy,” were Chau’s initial thoughts upon seeing the Ford Territory.
After that, I did some research, watched reviews, and gathered all the information I could before making my decision. There’s also a funny story about how I put down a deposit for the car on the sixth day of Tet, which fell on a Friday. Usually, businesses just hold a grand opening without conducting any actual business, but I went ahead and made the first purchase of the year for that showroom. The salesperson was enthusiastic, and within Saturday and Sunday, all the paperwork was done to bring the car from the Hai Duong factory to Ho Chi Minh City. It only took about ten days for me to receive my new car.
“To date, the Ford Territory has accompanied me and my family for nearly 30,000 kilometers,” Chau shared.
– You’ve had your Territory for over a year now, and you’ve already clocked nearly 30,000 kilometers, which is quite a significant number. I’m sure you’ve had many memorable trips and adventures with this car?
In addition to my daily commute, I often join offline events organized by the Ford Territory Owners Saigon group, ranging from small gatherings to large-scale outings. Sometimes, we spontaneously decide to drive to Vung Tau for a weekend getaway.
The most memorable trip was when I picked up the car from the dealership. On a whim, I turned to my wife and said, “Let’s go to Dalat and test out our new car.” Without any planning, we packed our bags and left for a week-long vacation. It was a bit daring since I had only driven sedans before, and this was my first time driving an SUV to Dalat. I wasn’t familiar with the car or the road, but we managed just fine.
“Without any preparation, my wife and I set off on our journey with the Ford Territory,” Chau said.
– Can you share with us the strengths and weaknesses of the Ford Territory, and the aspects that you are satisfied or dissatisfied with?
One of the strengths I appreciate is the car’s performance. I like powerful and responsive acceleration, but I also want a smooth driving experience, and the Territory delivers just that with its 7-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission, eliminating the jerkiness often associated with conventional transmissions.
I enjoy the thrill of driving, and my wife can comfortably ride with me without feeling exhausted, thanks to the smooth and responsive acceleration. That’s one of the main reasons I’m pleased with the Territory’s performance.
The Ford Territory is equipped with a 1.5L Ecoboost turbocharged engine, producing a maximum output of 158 horsepower and a peak torque of 248 Nm.
Additionally, the interior space is very roomy and comfortable. I’ve installed two small seats in the back to create a bed, so my wife can lie down and rest if she needs to. Not to mention, the Territory’s cargo area is spacious, easily accommodating all our family’s belongings without having to fold down the rear seats.

There’s one aspect that I’m not entirely satisfied with, and it’s the suspension. While it provides a smooth ride in the city, there’s a bit of sway on long-distance trips. I understand that it’s a trade-off, as Ford designed this vehicle primarily for urban use.
“If possible, I think Ford should make the rear suspension a bit stiffer in the next upgrade to maintain the smooth ride in the city while improving stability on long-distance journeys,” Chau suggested.
– The Titanium edition that you own comes with a comprehensive set of convenience and safety features. What are your thoughts on these ‘options’?
I highly value the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) in this car. In the year that I’ve owned it, the technology has saved me from potential accidents about 5-6 times.
For instance, once, while driving to work, I encountered a high bump in the road. The midday sun caused glare, and as I drove over the bump, I suddenly noticed a car stopped at a red light just a few meters ahead. I had already started to release the accelerator, but the car braked abruptly, avoiding a collision.
“At that moment, I had already lifted my foot off the accelerator, but thankfully, the ADAS kicked in, or else a crash would have occurred,” Chau recalled.
As for convenience features, I feel pampered by the extensive list of amenities included in this mid-range trim.
– What are your thoughts and impressions of the “Discover Territory – Continuing the Legacy” journey?
I found this journey to be meaningful. Vietnam has so many beautiful places to explore, and it’s fantastic to be able to discover them in a car that I love. This trip also allowed me to meet new friends and learn from their perspectives on cars and driving safety.
Additionally, I gained valuable insights into event organization, which will undoubtedly help me improve and support future events for the Ford Territory Owners Saigon group.
“This journey not only left me with beautiful memories but also provided me with countless learning opportunities,” Chau shared.
