Despite being an older technology, AM Radio remains a reliable tool in remote and rugged environments.

With advancements in science and technology, radio systems have gradually become less common in automobiles over the past decade, replaced by more modern infotainment screens. However, a new bill that is soon to be enacted into law by the US government may bring this old-school equipment back to all new cars.

The “AM Radio for All Cars” bill, which was passed by the US House of Representatives on September 18, mandates that all new passenger vehicles include a device to access AM radio stations. If approved by the Senate, this proposal will become law, making radio a mandatory feature in all new cars in the US.

The reason behind this proposal by US lawmakers is safety. AM radio is a reliable means for the government to easily and regularly provide information to the public. Additionally, it can operate effectively in remote and rugged areas without cell phone or internet service.

On the other hand, many automakers are reluctant to integrate this old technology into new cars. Several car brands, including major ones such as Volkswagen and Tesla, have removed AM radio from their vehicles over the years. Even when manufacturers retain the radio feature, the technology used is often limited to FM.

For electric vehicles, the issue is more complex due to potential radio signal interference from electromagnetic waves. According to a 2023 report by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), keeping AM radio in vehicles will cost automakers a total of up to $3.8 billion by 2030 to protect electric motors from radio wave interference.
