When it comes to vehicle reliability, engine durability is undoubtedly a top criterion. And according to a survey by market research firm J.D. Power, the most reliable SUV engines for 2024 belong to the Toyota family.
J.D. Power’s latest survey revealed the top three SUVs with the most reliable engines for 2024: Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, and Lexus GX. While these SUVs span different brands, they share the same automotive parent company. Lexus and Toyota are both owned by Toyota Motor Corporation and benefit from shared parts, engineering, and features. However, Lexus is positioned as a luxury brand and utilizes more expensive manufacturing materials.
According to J.D. Power’s findings, the Toyota 4Runner 2024 achieved a reliability rating of 86/100, which is above average and commendable, as not many SUVs attain this level. A score of 70-80 is considered average, while 81-100 is above average, and the top scores of 91-100 are the best.
The Toyota 4Runner 2024 is equipped with a reliable 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 377 Nm of torque. On average, a 4Runner can clock over 480,000 km and even up to 640,000 km.
Following closely is the Toyota Highlander with an average reliability score of 79. This SUV is fitted with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. One impressive feature of this engine is its bulletproof reliability. As one of the most reliable SUVs, the Highlander is expected to clock between 480,000 and 650,000 km.
Lastly, the Lexus GX 2024 boasts an impressive reliability rating of 89/100, just shy of the highest score. The standard 4.6-liter V8 engine in the Lexus GX 2024 generates 301 horsepower and 649 Nm of torque. A Lexus GX is projected to cover more than 480,000 km.
