SAIC-GM’s joint venture with the world’s largest battery manufacturer, CATL, has resulted in the development of the fastest-charging electric vehicle batteries globally.
This LFP battery boasts a 6C charging rate, enabling a 100% battery capacity charge in just 10 minutes. With a 5-minute charge – the average time it takes for drivers to stop for gasoline – the vehicle can travel approximately 200 kilometers.
Thus far, the commercially produced battery with the highest charging rate is the 5.5C battery, featured in the Zeekr 007 2025 sedan. The Zeekr 007 offers a maximum range of 688 kilometers under the CLTC cycle. Thanks to its super-fast charging technology, the 007 can travel over 500 kilometers with just a 15-minute charge.
Currently, the Zeekr 007 holds the title for the fastest-charging electric vehicle globally. However, this may change once SAIC-GM introduces their new 6C battery into commercial electric vehicles.
The SAIC-GM LFP 6C battery will enter production by the end of 2024 and is expected to be operational by 2025, integrating General Motors’ Ultium electric vehicle platform’s 900V architecture. Additional features, such as CTP structure and enhanced cooling technology, are also anticipated to be introduced alongside the new battery.
