According to Carscoops, MG has confirmed that it will be building a car manufacturing plant, along with a research and development center, in Mexico. With this move, MG becomes the second Chinese automotive brand to establish a production base in the North American country.
MG has already begun selling its products in Mexico, but it now aims to manufacture MG-branded vehicles and its premium IM brand cars locally. The SAIC-owned brand affirmed that the new facility will help expand its market reach into the Caribbean region and provide a better understanding of the Latin American automotive market.
While Carscoops reports that related information is currently scarce, it is highly likely that MG’s Mexican production base will be located somewhere between Mexico City and the border with the United States.
Reuters notes that MG has not framed this move as part of a future expansion into the American market. Earlier this year, BYD announced plans to build a plant in Mexico but stated that it would not use this facility to export cars to the US.
MG currently offers a diverse range of products to Mexican customers. |
According to Carscoops, if MG chooses to produce cars in Mexico and sell them in the US, it could theoretically avoid the additional 100% import tariff that America imposes on cars imported from China. However, the situation could become more challenging for MG or any Chinese car manufacturer, as the Biden administration is reportedly planning to ban Chinese software from appearing on autonomous vehicles in the US. The American government has also pressured Mexico to stop providing incentives to Chinese carmakers planning to invest in the southern neighbor.
Tesla once considered building a plant in Mexico but has since postponed those plans until after the US presidential election. According to Reuters, Elon Musk expressed concern that a re-elected Trump might impose additional import tariffs on cars manufactured in Mexico and imported into the US.
