On September 27, BYD announced that it has partnered with Huawei to equip its upcoming Leopard 8 model with advanced autonomous driving technology.
In a press release, BYD shared its ambition to develop the world’s first off-road-focused autonomous driving technology. The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, or Leopard 8 as it’s known internationally, will feature Huawei’s state-of-the-art Qiankun ADS 3.0 system upon its launch.
Huawei unveiled the Qiankun ADS 3.0 system back in April. This latest version is a significant upgrade from the Huawei ADS 2.0, boasting improvements in intelligent driving without maps, collision avoidance, and parking in all scenarios.
With its exclusive processor, LiDAR, and an array of sensors, Qiankun ADS 3.0 delivers lightning-fast image and situation processing. Additionally, the technology suite includes a smart parking feature that enables the vehicle to enter and exit parking spots autonomously, even without the driver inside.
The two companies aim to develop the world’s first intelligent off-road driving solution. To achieve this, the Qiankun ADS 3.0 system integrated into the Leopard 8 will be fine-tuned for an off-road-specific model.
Fang Cheng Bao is BYD’s luxury off-road vehicle brand. The upcoming Leopard 8, their second model, is expected to launch by the end of this year with a price tag of 500,000 Chinese yuan (approximately 71,000 US dollars). This large SUV boasts dimensions of 5195/1994/1875 mm in length, width, and height, respectively, and has a wheelbase of 2920 mm.
In addition to the Qiankun ADS 3.0 system, the Leopard 8 will also feature Huawei’s HiCar system. HiCar is Huawei’s mobile application for automobiles, allowing users to connect their phones to the vehicle’s infotainment system, similar to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Leopard 8 promises to be one of the most powerful off-road SUVs on the market. Under the hood, it packs a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.0L Turbo gasoline engine producing 272 horsepower, coupled with two electric motors on the front and rear axles, delivering 200 kW and 300 kW, respectively. The combined output of this powertrain is an impressive 929 horsepower, enabling the SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h.
The Leopard 8’s battery utilizes BYD’s subsidiary FinDreams’ Blade LFP battery technology, although the exact capacity of the battery pack has not yet been disclosed.
