A recent iSeeCars study revealed that electric vehicles depreciate faster than their internal combustion engine counterparts, with a notable drop in value compared to gas, diesel, and hybrid vehicles after approximately three years of ownership.
The data indicates that the average value of electric vehicles has declined by 31.8% since 2023. Here’s a breakdown of the depreciation rates of the top 10 best-selling electric vehicles in the US after three years of ownership:
Tesla Model X
Despite its premium price point, the Tesla Model X qualifies for a maximum tax credit of $7,500 (185 million VND), making it a more financially viable option for buyers.
Consequently, this model tends to retain its value in the resale market. According to the study, the Tesla Model X maintains approximately 61.2% of its value after three years, 39.3% after five years, and 20.2% after a decade of ownership.
It currently stands as the best value-retaining vehicle in the iSeeCars survey.
Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 is a popular choice among consumers and is known for its reliability. As a result, it retains a significant portion of its value, approximately 60.9%, after three years of ownership.
Additionally, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD variant is still eligible for the $7,500 (185 million VND) tax credit.
Tesla Model Y
Despite some reported issues with the steering wheel that led to a vehicle recall, the Tesla Model Y retains an estimated 58.5% of its value after approximately three years. It is projected to hold 41% of its value after five years and 23.4% after a decade.
Ford F-150 Lightning
The Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric pickup truck that entered production in April 2022, has the shortest presence in the market among the vehicles on this list.
According to the study, it retains approximately 57.1% of its value after more than two years of ownership.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Introduced in 2021, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is estimated to retain 53.2% of its value after three years of ownership. While it has been recalled due to issues with its integrated charging controller, only about 1% of the recalled vehicles were affected by this problem.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
The Ford Mustang Mach-E has witnessed a threefold increase in sales due to attractive incentives offered by the manufacturer. Typically, mainstream models tend to have higher resale values. The study reveals that the Mustang Mach-E retains approximately 52.3% of its value after three years of ownership.
Volkswagen ID.4
The Volkswagen ID.4 experiences a depreciation rate of around 50.5% after three years of ownership, according to the survey. While there is currently a recall for this model due to safety concerns, vehicles produced in 2024 are not affected, providing peace of mind for prospective buyers of newer models.
BMW i4
The BMW i4, a 2021 model, has a depreciation rate of 53.2% after three years, leaving its value at $24,689 (608 million VND) in 2024. After a decade, its value is projected to be only 19.9%, translating to an estimated selling price of $10,519 (259 million VND) in 2031.
Rivian R1S
Having been on the market for just two years, the three-year depreciation rate for the Rivian R1S is based on projections for used vehicles. The Rivian R1S is regarded as one of the safest cars on the road today. However, its reliability remains to be fully assessed due to its limited market presence.
The study indicates that this model retains approximately 46.6% of its value after a period of ownership.
Chevrolet Bolt EV
According to the research, the Chevrolet Bolt EV retains 43.6% of its value after three years. In the US market, buyers of this model continue to benefit from state-level incentives. However, the vehicle has been discontinued for unspecified reasons, despite consistently breaking sales records.
