There are rumors that Toyota is collaborating with Mazda and Subaru to develop an entirely new engine.
This engine is speculated to be featured in the upcoming Toyota Hilux, expected to launch in 2025.Â
The new Toyota Fortuner generation is likely to share the same platform with the Hilux, so it’s expected to be equipped with this engine as well.
Toyota is reportedly working on a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine with various performance specifications: 300 hp/400 Nm, 400 hp/549 Nm, or 600 hp, catering to different vehicle segments.
Compared to its predecessors, the new 2.0L engine from Toyota offers a 30% better thermal efficiency, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions. Additionally, it boasts a more compact size while delivering significantly higher performance.
There are also reports of Toyota developing another engine with the same cylinder count but a smaller displacement of 1.5L. This engine is said to offer 30% better fuel efficiency compared to their current 2.5L engine.
Notably, this new engine is designed to be compatible with various fuels, including gasoline, conventional diesel, and carbon-neutral alternatives such as ethanol, synthetic gasoline, and liquid hydrogen.
