The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) reported that in July, the Vietnamese automotive market continued its sales growth trajectory, with a total of 28,920 vehicles sold. This included 22,847 passenger cars, and the B-segment sedans contributed 4,184 units to this figure, comprising of sales from the Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, Honda City, Mazda2, Mitsubishi Attrage, and Kia Soluto.

Toyota Vios Dominates its Rivals

In the first report of the third quarter, Toyota Vios sales surged to 1,745 units, equivalent to a remarkable 127% growth compared to June. In the same month, it also regained its top position in the segment, outperforming its direct competitors.

Specifically, Toyota Vios’ sales of 1,745 units surpassed the combined sales of Hyundai Accent and Honda City. In July, Hyundai Accent sold 985 units in Vietnam, while Honda City reported sales of 744 units.

Brand June July
Toyota Vios 769 1745
Hyundai Accent 968 985
Honda City 443 744
Mazda2 361 425
Mitsubishi Attrage 277 247
Kia Soluto 45 38

Honda City’s sales, in particular, witnessed a significant 68% growth compared to the previous month’s report. This impressive performance can likely be attributed to the brand’s continuous promotional programs offering registration fee support.

On the other hand, Hyundai Accent experienced a modest 2% sales increase from the previous month. With 985 units sold in July, the cumulative sales gap between Hyundai Accent and its rival, Toyota Vios, has significantly narrowed.

Currently, Hyundai Accent remains the best-selling B-segment sedan in Vietnam, with 5,973 units delivered to customers since the beginning of the year. However, Toyota Vios is hot on its heels, having sold a cumulative total of 5,960 units, mainly due to its remarkable performance in the first report of the third quarter.

Kia Soluto in Danger

Suzuki Ciaz is no longer part of Suzuki’s passenger car product portfolio in Vietnam, which means one of the most familiar names on the list of slowest-selling cars is now absent.

However, Kia Soluto has joined the ranks of slow-selling vehicles in the B-segment sedan category in Vietnam, with sales of only 38 units in July, equivalent to a 16% decrease. Cumulatively, Kia Soluto has sold 224 units since the beginning of the year, translating to an average monthly sales figure of 32 units in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Attrage also experienced a slight dip in sales, reaching 247 units in July. Another imported sedan from Thailand, the Mazda2, saw an 18% increase in sales, selling 425 units in the opening month of the third quarter.

Overall, the B-segment sedan market in Vietnam is dominated by Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, and Honda City, while the rest of the segment sells at a much slower pace, except for the Mazda2, which can be considered to have relatively acceptable sales figures.

Specifically, the combined sales of Vios, Accent, and City for the first seven months reached 15,993 units, while the entire segment recorded sales of 20,360 units, including 8 units of the now-discontinued Suzuki Ciaz. Thus, these top three models alone contributed to nearly 78.6% of the total sales in the B-segment sedan category.

In reality, these three best-selling names in the B-segment are also frequent entrants in the list of the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam. Among them, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Vios are still in contention for the top spots if they can maintain an average monthly sales figure of over 1,000 units until the end of the year.
