The 2025 BMW M5 has a significant weight increase compared to its predecessor due to the introduction of an electric motor system, however, the Bavarian carmaker asserts that this does not affect the driving experience.

In June 2024, the new M5 was officially unveiled to the world by BMWa> and quickly garnered attention from car enthusiasts. This is also the first M5 generation to be equipped with a V8 M TwinPower Turbo engine combined with the brand new M Hybrid technology. However, this model has also sparked controversies regarding its design and weight optimization.

The new BMW M5 weighs in at a hefty 2,444 kg, equivalent to a Bentley Flying Spur. The main reason for this “monster” weight is its larger size compared to its predecessor and the new electric motor system.

Responding to criticisms about the new M5, Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, said that despite the weighty specs, the car still delivers an incredible driving experience with no noticeable lag.

The executive added that opting for a hybrid powertrain was the only way to keep the V8 engine alive for at least one more generation of this model, given the increasingly stringent emission regulations, especially in Europe.

Previously, BMW had considered manufacturing an all-electric M5 but dropped the idea as it would not deliver the performance and driving feel expected by M5 owners.

Frank van Meel believes that the hybrid powertrain, comprising a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine and an improved electric motor from the XM, is the perfect combination for the M5. The M division has “long foreseen” that the new high-performance sedan would have a significant weight increase but assures that customers will not feel it when they get behind the wheel.

The 2025 BMW M5 boasts a combined output of 717 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. This propels the car from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, just a tad slower than the previous M5 Competition’s 3.3 seconds.

The energy source for the electric motor is an 18.6kWh battery pack located under the floor, allowing for a maximum range of 40 km in pure electric mode.

The M5’s top speed is limited to 250km/h, or 306km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package performance upgrade.

Currently, the BMW M5 is priced at $119,500 (approximately 2.96 billion VND) in the US market.
