Tesla Unveils its Latest Autonomous Electric Car Prototype at ‘We, Robot’ Event in Los Angeles
Named Robocab, this concept car is a fully autonomous vehicle with wireless charging technology.
CEO Elon Musk himself introduced the car to the public. The billionaire sat in the passenger seat of the Cybercab and was driven to an outdoor stage a few hundred meters away, with the whole process being livestreamed.
Cybercab is one of the projects under Tesla’s strategic vision for the future of autonomous driving, announced by Elon Musk in 2016. Musk had stated that all Tesla cars produced would have full self-driving capabilities, allowing owners to use them as robotaxis.
The exterior design of the Cybercab is inspired by the Cybertruck pickup, featuring slim headlights that wrap around the front end and gull-wing doors. Inside, there are only two seats, a large screen in the dashboard, and no pedals or steering wheel.
What sets the Cybercab apart is its reliance solely on artificial intelligence (AI) and cameras for autonomous driving, without the need for supplementary hardware like lidar used by competitors. It also differs from other electric cars by having no charging port, as it is equipped with an induction charging system. However, details about the powertrain configuration, battery, and charger of this model have not yet been disclosed by the company.
“The future of autonomous driving is here,” affirmed Elon Musk. “We have 50 fully autonomous vehicles right here. You’ll see Model Y and Cybercab, all driverless.”
In addition to the Cybercab, Tesla also unveiled two other notable products: the autonomous Robotvan bus and the humanoid robot Optimus.
The Cybercab is slated to enter mass production in 2026, with a price tag of under $30,000 (approximately 744 million VND).
