BMW has issued a recall for 12,535 Mini Cooper SE electric vehicles due to potential battery and voltage system issues that may cause fires. The recall affects vehicles produced between 2020 and 2024.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), several complaints have been lodged regarding the Mini Cooper EV. Investigations revealed that the battery systems in these electric SUVs may have been incorrectly assembled or damaged. The batteries can overheat while the vehicle is in motion.

Some complaints also indicated that the batteries continued to overheat even when the vehicle was temporarily stopped or parked.

To address this issue, owners are advised to take their vehicles to authorized dealers for a software update. The update will include a function to detect voltage system faults and resolve overheating by discharging the battery to below 30% in emergency mode.

The Mini Cooper EV is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle. The new-generation model, launched earlier this year, features a 215-horsepower electric motor and two battery options: 40 kWh or 54 kWh. The electric vehicle offers a minimum range of 386 km. Prices start from $28,900 to $37,150, depending on the configuration.
