BYD Unveils the Shark, Its First Electric Pickup Truck
BYD has recently entered the Australian market with its latest offering, the BYD Shark (also known as the Shark 6), priced competitively below AUD 60,000 (approximately VND 1.018 billion). This positions it as a more affordable alternative to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
The BYD Shark is the company’s first venture into the pickup truck segment, built on BYD’s DMO platform, a super-hybrid off-road platform.
With overall dimensions of 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, the Shark is larger than the Toyota Hilux, with a wheelbase that is 175 mm longer.
The BYD Shark boasts a design reminiscent of the Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Ranger. Its front end features a bold LED headlight design with a large grille and a prominent BYD logo.
The side profile showcases a muscular stance with pronounced wheel arches, large mirrors, and wide door sills. The rear of the truck is simpler in design, featuring taillights with a central LED strip. A black stripe on the C-pillar, extending to the rear window, adds a touch of sportiness to the overall look.
The interior of the BYD Shark offers a unique experience compared to its competitors. It features a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, similar to other BYD models, which can rotate vertically.
Other notable features include a flat-bottom steering wheel, a central control cluster with a gear shifter, large grip handles, oversized buttons and switches, and two wireless charging pads. Accents of orange add a splash of color to the cabin.
Under the hood, the BYD Shark is powered by a hybrid system, combining a 1.5L gasoline engine with two electric motors, delivering an impressive 430 horsepower. It can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and offers a maximum range of 840 km (gasoline + electric) with a pure electric range of 100 km.
The BYD Shark is scheduled to go on sale in Australia on October 29, with deliveries expected to begin in December 2024.
