After a long period of “probing” the Vietnamese market, the B+ size SUV Omoda C5 model has now officially started taking bookings.

Since 2023, there have been rumors of Chery re-entering the Vietnamese market through the two brands Omoda & Jeacoo. The first product to be revealed was the Omoda C5, which can be categorized as a B+ size SUV based on its dimensions.

In April 2024, the Chinese brand signed a joint venture agreement and collaborated with the Geleximco Group to build a car factory in Thai Binh.

According to the announcement, the company will initially import cars from Indonesia for distribution. The two models to “greet” the Vietnamese market first will be the Omoda C5 (gasoline) and E5 (electric).

After about 6 months, the company has now announced bookings for the Omoda C5. The E5 model was not mentioned. Despite the announcement of bookings, the delivery time remains unknown.

The Chinese carmaker has also not announced the selling price of the Omoda C5. According to speculations, the price will fluctuate around 7xx million VND.

If this price range is true, the Chinese car Omoda C5 will struggle to compete with established rivals in the same segment in Vietnam, such as: Hyundai Creta (599 – 699 million VND), Kia Seltos (599 – 799 million VND), Mitsubishi Xforce (599 – 705 million VND), MG ZS (518 – 588 million VND), etc.

Regarding the Omoda E5, the car is introduced as the electric version of the Omoda 5. Its size is comparable to that of the VinFast VF e34 in Vietnam.

It is unclear what the price and launch timing of this model will be, but in reality, Omoda does not yet have a charging station network in Vietnam. Without a competitive price, this model will struggle to compete with VinFast VF e34, which is currently priced at 721 million VND (VinFast is the only electric car brand in Vietnam, and besides owning a nationwide charging station system, the Vietnamese carmaker also frequently offers attractive incentives for local customers).
