Born and raised in a province known for its agricultural produce, my family has always been involved in farming. It’s a tough and laborious job, and so my parents encouraged my older brothers to pursue a university education, and even offered them the opportunity to study abroad if they wished.
Two months ago, my eldest son invited me to the city to visit his student residence. It’s located in a nice area, in a high-rise apartment building with all modern amenities, although the streets are a bit busier than what I’m used to back home. I’m considering buying him a car so he can get around more easily.
This year, we had a bountiful harvest of durian and coffee, thanks to our few dozen hectares of land. With the windfall, I decided to treat my son to a nice car, something that would make him feel proud and comfortable among his peers. He expressed interest in a Porsche SUV, so we went to the dealership to check out their offerings.
The Reason I’ll Never Buy a Supercar: It’s Not About the Money. Illustration photo.
My son pointed to a five-seater car priced at over 3.6 billion VND, and casually mentioned that it would take a year for the car to be delivered if we ordered it now. That didn’t sit well with me, so I suggested we look at other showrooms. There, he fell in love with a Mercedes G63, but again, we were told it would take at least six months to a year to get our hands on one. Frustrated, we decided to explore the used car market, where we could find something immediately available and at a more reasonable price.
We visited a showroom with a wide variety of vehicles on offer, including two G63s, priced lower than the brand new ones. We were all set to buy a 2020 gray G63 for 8.7 billion VND, but then my son’s attention was caught by a two-seater with a distinctive “crescent” logo. It had scissor doors that opened upwards, and its engine roared like the tractors back home. I couldn’t understand his fascination with it, but he begged for a test drive.
Hyundai Custin car
When we returned home, my son and I had very different opinions about the car. He pleaded with his mother to convince me, and eventually, we agreed to consider it. The car in question cost over 7 billion VND, which was within our means, but it could only accommodate two people, and its high speed made it quite dangerous. So, we decided to consult each other further before making a decision.
A month later, my wife and I traveled to Saigon to purchase a car for our son. Fortunately, a supercar event was taking place, and our son took us to witness the beauty and power of these machines. However, we also witnessed two foreigners struggling to fix their broken-down Lamborghini, and then having trouble fitting their luggage into the tiny trunk. That night, my son agreed to purchase the G63 instead of the supercar, which was 2 billion VND cheaper but much less practical.
In the end, I realized that supercars like Lamborghinis, McLarens, or Ferraris are not meant for people like me, a simple farmer who just had a good harvest. Even if I could afford one, I wouldn’t choose the G63 with its cramped five-seater cabin. Instead, I’d opt for something like a Hyundai Custin or a Toyota Innova, a seven-seater with a spacious and comfortable interior. My neighbor recently bought a Custin, and I must say, it’s a much smoother ride than the G63. So, for now, I’ll stick to my farming and leave the supercars to those who truly need the speed and the status symbol.
