Ferrari has unveiled its latest masterpiece, the F80, which it affectionately calls the “+1” – a reference to the slightly offset passenger seat in relation to the driver’s seat.
With a price tag of around $4 million and a complex hybrid powertrain delivering an astonishing 1,184 horsepower, the Ferrari F80 represents the pinnacle of road-legal performance from the Italian marque. However, as the brand’s marketing director recently revealed, this supercar could have pushed the boundaries even further.
Ferrari’s $4 Million F80 is Almost a Single-Seater Despite Having a Passenger Seat
In a recent interview with Top Gear, Ferrari’s marketing director, Enrico Galliera, disclosed that the initial designs for the successor to the LaFerrari called for a single-seat configuration, a radical departure from tradition that would have turned heads even in the avant-garde world of supercars.
Ultimately, Ferrari opted for a two-seat setup, but even this is not your typical two-seater. “When we started the project, the initial idea that came up was that this car would be a single-seater,” revealed Galliera. “Why? Because we wanted to make it with really extreme proportions, so a very narrow cabin, widest possible shoulders, a wide track, etc. It was obviously a provocation, but by working together, we achieved the effect of a true single-seater while not giving up space for a passenger.”
Ferrari’s designers eventually decided on a two-seat configuration for the F80, but with a significant twist. The Italian company describes the new F80 as ‘+1’ and has created a distinct separation between the driver and passenger within the cabin.
While the driver is treated to a special racing bucket seat that can be adorned in various colors, the passenger doesn’t even get a proper seat but rather sits on a padded area decorated in the same somber hue as the rest of the cabin. This ‘passenger seat’ is also set slightly further back than the driver’s seat.
Further separating the driver and passenger is a central spine and a dashboard that angles predominantly towards the driver. This gives the F80 the feel of a single-seater while still offering owners the option to carry a passenger.
This unique interior design has allowed Ferrari to create a cockpit that is not only narrower for aerodynamic purposes but also exudes the character one would expect from a leading supercar. It’s aggressive, uncompromising, and unmistakably Ferrari.
Production of the F80 will be limited to just 799 units, and it’s no surprise that all of these cars have already been accounted for, with Ferrari’s typical approach of hand-picking owners rather than accepting orders from prospective buyers.
