Toyota is reportedly planning to unveil the new generation Hilux by the end of 2025.

The new Toyota Hilux will feature significant improvements in its exterior design, while its chassis will remain largely unchanged or only slightly upgraded. As such, not much is expected in terms of drivetrain options.

However, there are rumors that Toyota is testing a new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine for the Hilux. This engine is speculated to produce up to 300 horsepower and will likely be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission option.

Compared to its older engines, Toyota’s new 2.0L engine offers 30% better thermal efficiency, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, the new engine is more compact in size while delivering significantly higher performance.

There are also reports of Toyota developing another engine with the same number of cylinders but a smaller displacement of 1.5L. This engine is said to offer 30% better fuel efficiency compared to the standard 2.5L engine currently offered.

Notably, this new engine is designed to be compatible with various types of fuel, including gasoline, conventional diesel, and carbon-neutral alternatives such as ethanol, synthetic gasoline, and liquid hydrogen.

The current Toyota Hilux is equipped with a 2.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 221 horsepower. With these specifications, the Toyota pickup truck struggles to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor, hence the need for upgrades.
