BMW recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its X5 model with the release of special, limited-edition versions in the US and Canada. Rather than simply rebranding the same model for China, the local arm of BMW took a different approach by introducing the Dark Flame Limited Edition.
This China-exclusive version brings unique exterior and interior details to the X5 Li extended-wheelbase, setting it apart from other global variants.
BMW caters to Chinese customers with the X5 Dark Flame, limited to just 1,000 units
The China-exclusive Dark Flame model is based on the facelifted, long-wheelbase X5 that debuted in 2023. It leans heavily on dark, dramatic aesthetics, combining a Sapphire Blue exterior with contrasting Titan Gold accents.
These golden accents adorn the illuminated kidney grille, the front bumper air intakes, side gills, and window frames. Even the badge on the rear doors is treated with Titan Gold.
This SUV rides on 22-inch black-finished alloy wheels, with M-branded brake calipers. Other interesting highlights include smoked rear lights, Dark Flame graphics on the puddle lamps, and dark finish on the dual exhaust pipes.
The extended X5 Li not only looks bigger but is substantially larger. With a length of 5,060mm and a wheelbase of 3,105mm, this variant matches the dimensions of larger BMW models such as the X7 and XM.
On the inside, BMW opted for premium Sensafin synthetic leather upholstery in black for the seats and a dark grey Alcantara headliner around the standard panoramic “sky lounge” sunroof. The dark interior features contrasting golden stitching and carbon fiber inserts on the dashboard and center console.
As expected, the equipment level is high, including four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats, a curved digital cockpit, and a Harman Kardon sound system. Finally, the Dark Flame logo can be found on the cup holder, front seatbacks, and illuminated door sills.
This special edition is based on the xDrive40Li, featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid engine that produces 375 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Adaptive two-axle air suspension, M Sport exhaust, and M Sport brakes are standard equipment.
The BMW X5 xDrive40 Li Exclusive Dark Flame Edition is priced at 830,000 Chinese yuan (approximately $116,500) in China, with a limited production run of just 1,000 units. This price point makes it CNY 101,000 ($14,200) more expensive than the M Sport Package with the same engine and transmission, and CNY 30,000 ($4,200) pricier than the Night Edition.
