Twenty-four-year-old Suk Min Choi, also known as YouTuber Alex Choi, was arrested on June 5 and charged with placing an explosive or incendiary device on a helicopter, according to a press release from the Central California District Attorney’s Office on June 6.
Choi, who boasts 923,000 subscribers on YouTube and 1.2 million followers on Instagram, uploaded a video titled “Destroying a Lamborghini with Fireworks” on July 4, 2023.
The nearly 11-minute-long video, which is no longer available on Choi’s social media pages, depicted two women shooting fireworks from a helicopter at a Lamborghini sports car.
“After capturing what appears to be a live-action version of a fictional video game, the video cuts to behind-the-scenes footage of how Choi filmed the first part of the video. In this section, Choi is alleged to have made various references to coordinating the filming himself,” the Central California District Attorney’s Office said.
Choi also thanked a camera company for “indulging in my stupid and crazy ideas.”
In December 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contacted the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation to report that Choi’s 11-minute video, posted in July 2023 and since removed, was under investigation.
Authorities believe the video was filmed in June 2023 on federal land at the El Mirage Dry Lake in San Bernardino County, California. According to prosecutors, the Bureau of Land Management provided photographs of tire tracks left by the sports car.
According to the affidavit, Choi is also accused of lacking the proper permits to film in the area, including FAA approval for planned filming activities involving helicopters.
Additionally, prosecutors said Choi traveled to Las Vegas to purchase fireworks as such activity is illegal in California.
Ciaran McEvoy, a spokesperson for the Central California District Attorney’s Office, told CNN that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Choi’s YouTube channel features dozens of videos showcasing flashy luxury sports cars, with the most recent one posted in December 2023.
McEvoy stated that Choi made his initial court appearance on June 6 and was released on a $50,000 bond. The next hearing is expected to take place on July 2.
According to prosecutors, the YouTuber faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
