Mazda CX-5 has enjoyed a strong reputation among consumers over the years, consistently ranking among the best SUV models.
However, in the last eight years, Mazda CX-5 has seemingly stagnated, with the Japanese automaker making no breakthrough changes to this C-segment CUV. As a result, it has fallen behind, with several competitors surging ahead.
According to a survey by Car and Driver, the Mazda CX-5 has dropped from first to fourth place in the list of best SUV/CUV models. Even its sibling, the Mazda CX-50, surpasses it due to its more modern features.
Similarly, in a survey by Edmunds, the Mazda CX-5 ranked third behind the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50. It fell even further to sixth place in the KBB survey.
Since 2017, the Mazda CX-5 has not introduced any radical changes in design, convenience features, or engine options. In contrast, its rival, the Honda CR-V, took a leap forward by launching a new generation in 2022.
Currently, the Mazda CX-5 still lacks a touchscreen, requiring users to rely on knobs to control the infotainment screen. Additionally, Apple CarPlay wireless functionality is only available in the higher-end trim levels.
Moreover, while other automakers are shifting towards electric or hybrid vehicles for improved fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness, the CX-5 continues to rely solely on internal combustion engines.
Unless the Japanese automaker embraces innovation, the Mazda CX-5 will struggle to reclaim its former glory in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
