Geely unveils the EM-i plug-in hybrid technology, outperforming BYD’s system in efficiency and range.

Geely has officially introduced the EM-i plug-in hybrid system (NordThor 2.0), boasting superior specifications compared to BYD’s DM 5.0 engine. This system comprises an internal combustion engine (ICE) with the highest thermal efficiency globally and an 11-in-1 electric drive system.

The new setup pairs a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a thermal efficiency of 46.5%, which Geely claims is the best in the world. This engine is also capable of running on methanol and operating at temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius, coupled with a 214 horsepower electric motor.

Real-world testing revealed that Geely’s EM-i technology achieved a fuel consumption rate of just 2.62 liters per 100 kilometers, resulting in a combined gas-electric range of up to 2,390 kilometers. These figures surpass those of BYD’s newly launched PHEV system from May 2024, which consumes 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers and offers a range of 2,100 kilometers when fully charged and fueled.

In practical trials, a Galaxy Starship 7 equipped with the EM-i powertrain delivered a fuel economy of 3 liters per 100 kilometers.

Geely stated that this new hybrid technology will also be implemented in Renault, Volvo, and Lotus vehicles. While Volvo and Lotus are subsidiaries of the group, Renault is currently a strategic partner of Geely.

Currently, BYD leads the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle sales rankings in China, capturing a 34.6% market share in the first nine months of 2024. This significantly outperforms Geely’s 7.4% and Tesla’s 6.5% during the same period.

BYD’s robust sales performance resulted in a record-breaking quarterly sales figure in the third quarter of 2024, with plug-in hybrid sales surging by 76% to 685,830 units.
