The Suzuki Jimny is bidding farewell to its current generation with a special edition model, the Jimny Mata, as the brand prepares to unveil its mid-life update. Suzuki Italia has created a fitting send-off for this rugged little off-roader, producing just 150 individually-numbered units exclusively for the Italian market.

The Jimny Mata, a follow-up to the unique concept unveiled at the 2024 Turin Auto Show, carries over some distinctive design elements from its predecessor. In contrast to the standard Jimny, the Mata receives a subtle yet impactful visual tweak and rugged accessories that enhance its nostalgic appeal.

The New Suzuki Jimny Mata: A Special Edition Bids Farewell to the Current Generation

The Mata’s exterior stands out with a two-tone finish, combining Metallic Siberian Silver with matte black accents on the hood, pillars, and roof. Up front, it sports a classic Suzuki grille. Aluminum-style mudguards match the side skirts, contrasting with the unpainted plastic finish of the bumpers and mudguard extensions.

On the sides, you’ll find door protection stripes and mudguards. The Jimny Mata rides on 15-inch alloy wheels, with a supplementary set provided for winter tire use. At the rear, a hard cover protects the spare wheel. Additionally, the off-roader benefits from an extra aluminum underbody guard.

Inside, the cabin maintains a relatively simple aesthetic, with the unique touch of a numbered plaque on the dashboard to mark each unit.

Based on the high-spec trim level, the Jimny Mata is equipped with a 7-inch infotainment system, Pioneer sound setup, rearview camera, heated seats, and basic ADAS features. The cargo area features rubber mats, a practical addition that keeps things tidy and easy to clean.

Like all EU-spec Jimnys since 2021, this special edition is only available as a two-seat LCV due to emissions regulations.

Under the hood, you’ll find the standard 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, delivering 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission.

“Mata” means “once again, to surpass” in Japanese and is often used in the phrase “Mata-ne,” meaning “see you soon.” Suzuki Italia believes this is a fitting name for the final edition of the current Jimny, acknowledging that “this may be the last chance to buy one before an indefinite hiatus.”

The company hopes this hiatus will be temporary, criticizing European regulations for “unfairly penalizing light vehicles.”

Looking ahead, the updated Jimny is expected to feature an electrified powertrain (possibly hybrid) that will allow it to return to the European market as a passenger vehicle rather than an LCV. Suzuki has also confirmed that an all-electric Jimny is in the works, specifically targeting the European market.

There are rumors of a pickup truck variant in the works, expanding the Jimny lineup beyond the familiar three-door body style and the new five-door SUV.

Italian car buyers can place their orders for the Suzuki Jimny Mata starting November 30, offering enthusiasts a final opportunity to own this special off-roader before it temporarily disappears.
