A few years ago, John Sarkisyan of a little-known tuning brand called S Klub, revealed a custom wide-body Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster. Since then, he’s gone on to overhaul a number of other classic Mercedes, Ferrari, and Porsche models, and at this year’s SEMA show, he unveiled this: the SLR ‘Renovatio.’
This wild take on the iconic Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren makes the Mansory SLR that was also on display at the event look almost understated in comparison.
A 30-piece body kit has been developed for the German supercar. It includes front and rear fender flares that add 10 inches to the width of the car, and while we’re not too bothered by the new fenders, some of the other modifications made are much more questionable.
Original Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
For starters, the SLR McLaren has been converted into a faux speedster that appears to take inspiration from the Bussnik AMG GT-S Speedlegend that was unveiled a few years ago.
As such, it features a Formula 1-style halo that runs over the cockpit and then includes a pair of bubble-style glass wind deflectors in front of the driver and passenger. The SLR Roadster was already a stunning car, and turning it into a speedster with a halo probably wasn’t the best idea.
It’s not just this conversion that makes the Renovatio look a little odd, though. The body kit includes a number of new components at the rear of the Mercedes, including a large wing that looks like it was taken straight out of a Need for Speed video game from the early 2000s. A large diffuser has also been fitted, but it doesn’t do the car any favors and looks a little over the top.
One area of this SLR that we do quite like, however, is the cabin. Vibrant red Alcantara trims a number of interior surfaces, including the steering wheel, dashboard, door cards, and seats.
There are also some attractive carbon fiber accents, including on the steering wheel, as well as the original silver air vents and HVAC controls.
