According to Carscoops, over 130 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vehicles in the US are being recalled due to an issue with the rear door latch.
Specifically, the German automaker has found that the SUV’s rear door may not fully latch, and there is a possibility that it could open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.
The recall notice explains that there is a misalignment between the rear door latch and the locking mechanism, causing the affected G-Class vehicles’ rear doors to not latch, open, or lock properly.
An additional notice states that in cases where the child safety lock has been activated for the rear door, if excessive force is used to attempt to open it from the inside, the latch components may deform, rendering the rear door unable to be opened from the outside.
This potential malfunction is considered a significant safety issue in the event of a collision, increasing the risk of injury to occupants inside the vehicle.
A total of 134 G-Class vehicles in the US are affected by this issue, including the G550 from 2019-2023, as well as some Mercedes-AMG G63 models from 2019-2022. The vehicles in question were manufactured between August 2018 and December 2022.
Mercedes first became aware of the potential issue in January 2021 when a US dealer contacted the company, reporting the need for replacement parts for the G-Class rear door latch.
The automaker subsequently launched an investigation into the parts shortage and discovered several warranty claims related to the door latch and associated components, including reports of the rear door opening while the vehicle was in motion.
US Mercedes-Benz dealers will be notified of the recall starting September 16, and customers will be informed after September 30. The rear door locks of the affected vehicles will be replaced.
