It may sound a tad far-fetched, but Ferrari is reportedly considering a move akin to Lamborghini’s revival of the iconic Countach. According to rumors, the Italian marque might be resurrecting the legendary F40, giving it a modern twist for 2024 or 2025.

Not too long ago, such a historical revision would have been considered sacrilegious. In fact, Lamborghini’s CEO at the time even stated that they would never put something like the much-loved Miura concept into production, as it was created solely to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original.

However, in 2021, Lamborghini unveiled an updated Countach based on the Sian, and with that name alone, they tapped into the nostalgia of enthusiasts worldwide. Now, Ferrari might be following suit, or so says Top Gear.

The British publication claims that, according to a “highly reliable source,” a modern F40 could be in the works as part of their limited-production “Icona” range. Adding fuel to the fire, Ferrari has already dabbled in nostalgia with a few of its recent creations. Both the Monza SP1/SP2 and the Daytona SP3 are testament to this trend of limited-production (and extremely expensive) supercars with retro styling cues.

The report asserts that Ferrari did something akin to this with the SP38 Deborah. That one-off creation was based on the 488 GTB and, like the last “prancing horse” signed off by Enzo Ferrari himself, featured a twin-turbo V8 engine and a louvered engine cover. However, this new creation will supposedly draw more heavily from the F40 in terms of design and overall spirit.

This seems like Ferrari’s response to Lamborghini’s Countach revival, but it’s likely more of an acknowledgment that they’re gauging market reaction to their rival’s retro release.

As people lined up to pay millions for the new Countach, which is essentially a restyled Sian (itself based on the Aventador), a new F40 could attract similar buyers—and likely face similar backlash from purists. But at least Ferrari never explicitly stated they wouldn’t do this, only to renege on their words like their competitor.
