The Toyota Yaris: A Compact Powerhouse. |
Toyota Motor’s latest statistics reveal a global auto production of 709,571 units, an 11.2% decline from the previous year. This marks the seventh consecutive month of declining auto production for the automaker.
Back home, the numbers aren’t any better, with a 22.2% dip from the previous month, totaling 185,680 vehicles.
According to Kyodo News, this downturn stems from a safety inspection scandal, which led to the suspension of production for popular models like the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross in June.
Come September, the auto giant resumed manufacturing these models following an investigation and lift of the ban by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.

Toyota representatives also attributed the decline to the temporary closure of all its Japanese factories in late August due to a powerful typhoon, which halted production.
In the international market, following the recall of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX in North America, Toyota’s output decreased by 6.5% to 523,891 units.
The string of controversies, coupled with fierce competition from Chinese automakers, has taken a toll on not just Toyota’s production but also its sales performance.
Global sales of Toyota vehicles dipped by 3.1% year-over-year to 826,863 units. Notably, domestic sales contracted by 9.1% to 109,505 vehicles, while sales in the populous Chinese market experienced a similar downturn, declining by 13.5%.
