Although the domestic car market experienced an upward trend in October 2024, sales figures for mid-size SUVs showed a mixed performance. Notably, only two models in this segment managed to sell over 1,000 units, namely the Ford Everest and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Conversely, two other models found themselves among the bottom 10 worst-selling cars in the market.

Mid-size SUV Sales Table for Oct 2024 (units: cars)

Ford Everest: 1,281 units sold

In October 2024, Vietnamese consumers purchased a total of 1,281 Ford Everest vehicles, representing an impressive 35.1% growth rate. This outstanding performance secured the model’s leading position in the mid-size SUV segment.

Ford Everest

Ford is offering attractive incentives for the Everest in November. They are providing a 100% rebate on registration fees for the standard version, valued at VND 109 million. Additionally, they are offering a VND 22 million discount on the Sport, Titanium, and Titanium Plus variants.

This mid-size SUV comes in six different versions, with prices ranging from VND 1.099 billion to VND 1.545 billion. Despite the relatively high price tag, the Ford Everest remains popular due to its eye-catching exterior design, spacious seven-seat interior, and comprehensive convenience and safety features.

Under the hood, the American SUV offers two diesel engine options, both with a 2.0L displacement. The first is a single-turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 170 horsepower and 405 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second option is a twin-turbocharged engine that generates 210 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. This more powerful engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and is exclusively available on the high-end trims.

Hyundai Santa Fe: 1,007 units sold

Similar to the Ford Everest, the Hyundai Santa Fe also achieved four-digit sales in October 2024, with 1,007 units sold, reflecting a growth rate of 32.8%. However, it ranked second in the mid-size SUV segment, falling short of the Everest’s sales figures.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The positive outcome can be attributed to the launch of the new-generation Hyundai Santa Fe in the Vietnamese market in September 2024. The latest model is offered in five different versions, with prices ranging from VND 1.069 billion to VND 1.365 billion. As a domestically produced and assembled vehicle, the Santa Fe also benefits from the government’s 50% reduction in registration fees.

The new generation model underwent a complete redesign, featuring a fresh look and enhanced equipment, including a new engine option. Interestingly, despite the removal of the diesel engine, the Santa Fe’s appeal remains strong.

Under the hood, the Korean SUV offers two gasoline engine choices. The first is a Smartstream 2.5L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that produces 194 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and is available with either front-wheel drive or the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system.

The second option is a Smartstream 2.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers an impressive 281 horsepower and 422 Nm of torque. This powerful engine is coupled with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission and the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system.

Toyota Fortuner: 416 units sold

Unlike its two main competitors, the Toyota Fortuner experienced a decline in sales, with only 416 units sold in October, representing a 7.7% decrease. However, it maintained its third-place position in the mid-size SUV segment.

Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is available in five different versions, with prices ranging from VND 1.055 billion to VND 1.35 billion. Notable features include a 9-inch touchscreen display and wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Customers have a choice of three different engines for the Fortuner: a 2.4L diesel, a 2.8L diesel, or a 2.7L gasoline engine. The respective performance figures for these engines are 147 horsepower/400 Nm, 201 horsepower/500 Nm, and 164 horsepower/245 Nm. All engine options are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and are available with either rear-wheel drive or 4WD.

Mazda CX-8: 294 units sold

Mazda CX-8 retained its fourth-place position behind the Toyota Fortuner, with 294 units sold, reflecting a 7.8% decrease in sales compared to the previous month.

Mazda CX-8

With prices ranging from VND 949 million to VND 1.129 billion, the Mazda CX-8 is currently one of the most affordable options in the mid-size SUV segment. Additionally, it benefits from the government’s 50% reduction in registration fees for domestically produced and assembled vehicles.

The Mazda CX-8 offers a competitive package with its attractive pricing, eye-catching design, and comprehensive convenience and safety features. However, as it hasn’t received any significant updates in a while, its sales performance remains stagnant.

At the heart of the CX-8 is a 2.5L Skyactiv-G gasoline engine that delivers 188 horsepower and 252 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD), depending on the trim level.

Kia Sorento: 140 units sold

Following in the footsteps of its sister model, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Kia Sorento also experienced sales growth in October, with 140 units sold, representing a 20.6% increase. However, its actual sales figures remain modest, placing it in a lower rank within the mid-size SUV segment.

Kia Sorento

In Vietnam, the Kia Sorento is offered in an impressive 12 different versions, with prices ranging from VND 964 million to VND 1.499 billion. It is the model with the most variants and the highest price point in the mid-size SUV segment.

Furthermore, the Sorento boasts an impressive four engine options, the most in its class. The first is a Smartstream 2.5 MPI gasoline engine that produces 177 horsepower and 232 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second option is a Smartstream D2.2 diesel engine that delivers 198 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The third option is a hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline engine producing 178 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque with an electric motor that adds 60 horsepower and 264 Nm of torque. This setup is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Lastly, there is a plug-in hybrid variant that pairs the same 1.6L gasoline engine with a more powerful electric motor that generates 90 horsepower and 304 Nm of torque. This plug-in hybrid system also utilizes a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: 58 units sold

October 2024 proved to be a challenging month for the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, as its sales figures dipped by 14.7% to only 58 units. Consequently, the model re-entered the list of the bottom 10 worst-selling cars in the market.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

To boost sales, Mitsubishi is offering attractive incentives for the Pajero Sport in November 2024, including a 100% rebate on registration fees, valued between VND 113 million and VND 136 million, along with a fuel voucher worth VND 35 million.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is available in two different versions, with prices ranging from VND 1.13 billion to VND 1.365 billion. Its pricing is quite similar to its competitors, but its design and features are less prominent.

The mid-size SUV is powered by a 2.4L MIVEC diesel engine that delivers 178 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. It offers both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options, with a rear differential lock available on the latter.

Isuzu mu-X: 23 units sold

Once again, the Isuzu mu-X found itself at the bottom of the mid-size SUV segment, selling only 23 units in October 2024, a significant decrease of 36.1%. Along with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the Isuzu mu-X was among the bottom 10 worst-selling cars in the market.

Isuzu mu-X

The Isuzu mu-X has a price range of VND 911 million to VND 1.25 billion, making it quite affordable. However, its unappealing design and lack of standout features have hindered its sales performance.

The Isuzu mu-X is powered by a 1.9L 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 150 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. The high-end trim features a four-wheel-drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the other variants come with rear-wheel drive.
