Since September 2024, there has been buzz surrounding the upcoming launch of the BYD Tang electric SUV in Vietnam. The vehicle’s name, Tang, which means sorrow and loss in Vietnamese, sparked curiosity and attention.
Initially, BYD Vietnam representatives confirmed that the electric vehicle would retain its original name, explaining that “Tang” is a transliteration of the word “Tang,” inspired by a Chinese dynasty. However, after careful consideration, BYD Vietnam decided to rename it as the BYD Tan EV for the local market.
The BYD Tan EV is now quietly available at Vietnamese dealerships, with a price tag of up to VND 1.569 billion. This positions it at a significantly higher price point compared to its direct competitor in the same segment, the VinFast VF8.
Dropping the “sensitive” name, the new electric SUV from BYD is priced at nearly VND 1.6 billion in Vietnam.
The BYD Tan EV in Vietnam boasts impressive performance with a front motor producing 241 horsepower and a rear motor generating 268 horsepower, resulting in a combined torque of 700 Nm. It features an all-wheel-drive system, and according to the Vietnam Registry’s website, it has an energy consumption of 218.9 Wh/km.
With a full charge, the Tan EV can travel up to 635 kilometers on the CLTC cycle in China. However, real-world driving ranges may vary.
Positioned in the D-segment of electric SUVs, the BYD Tan EV has dimensions of 4,870 x 1,950 x 1,725 mm (length x width x height) and a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. It also carries the distinctive design language of the BYD brand.

Similar to other BYD electric vehicles, the Tan EV sports the Dragon Face design language at the front, featuring sleek LED headlights and daytime running lights. A silver accent bar runs across the front, connecting the headlights and emblazoned with the “BYD” logo. The front bumper showcases a broad trapezoidal air intake, and the corners feature “C”-shaped air intakes.
The Tan EV rides on aerodynamically designed 5-spoke alloy wheels, and its side profile includes conventional door handles. At the rear, the LED taillights stretch across the width of the vehicle, and a roof spoiler with an integrated brake light sits atop the window.
