After a one-year hiatus, the Vietnam Auto and Motorcycle Show – Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) is back and will take place from October 23 to 27 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.

This year’s theme, “Technology Opens the Green Future,” promises the presence of many new energy vehicles and a host of green technologies showcased by automotive brands.

Subaru Crosstrek

Subaru has confirmed that the Subaru Crosstrek will be unveiled to Vietnamese customers at the VMS 2024. In its return to Vietnam, the Subaru Crosstrek will be offered in two versions: the 2.0 i-S EyeSight and the 2.0 i-S EyeSight e-Boxer Hybrid, both imported from Japan.

The Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 i-S EyeSight is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, producing 154 horsepower and 196 Nm of torque.

The most notable variant is the hybrid version of this B-segment SUV, featuring a 2.0L engine combined with an electric motor to deliver a total output of 150 horsepower and 196 Nm of torque.

As a B-segment SUV, the Subaru Crosstrek boasts dimensions of 4,480 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,580 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,670 mm and a ground clearance of 200 mm. The Crosstrek’s exterior closely resembles its “older brother,” the Subaru Outback.

Previously, the Subaru Crosstrek was available in Vietnam under the name Subaru XV, imported from Japan with a price of approximately 1.5 billion VND. With its return, the Subaru Crosstrek is still imported from Japan, so the selling price is expected to be no less than 900 million VND.

The Subaru Crosstrek’s competitors in Vietnam include the Toyota Corolla Cross (820-905 million VND), Mazda CX-30 (699-749 million VND), Peugeot 2008 (719-769 million VND), Mitsubishi Xforce (599-705 million VND), Toyota Yaris Cross (650-765 million VND), Kia Seltos (599-799 million VND), and Hyundai Creta (599-699 million VND).

This segment also includes the Nissan Kicks (858 million VND), VinFast VF 6 (from 675 million VND), BYD Atto 3 (766-886 million VND), and the MG4 EV, which starts at 828 million VND.

Honda Civic Hybrid Version

Earlier in August, Honda Vietnam announced that the Honda Civic sedan in the C-segment will soon have a hybrid version for Vietnamese customers.

The new Honda Civic with the hybrid engine option is confirmed to be launched in October and will almost certainly be present at the Japanese automaker’s booth at the VMS 2024.

Similar to the Honda CR-V, the hybrid version of the Honda Civic is equipped with the e:HEV powertrain, combining a 2.0L combustion engine with an electric motor to deliver a maximum output of 200 horsepower.

In addition to the hybrid option, the new Honda Civic in Vietnam has been refined with a hexagonal pattern on the grille, combined with a sharp front bumper and large, sporty air intakes. These elements are said to enhance the sedan’s aerodynamics.

The Honda Sensing safety technology suite is standard on the new Honda Civic. The hybrid version exclusively features active noise cancellation and a personal driving mode.

In the C-segment sedan market in Vietnam, only the Toyota Corolla Altis offers a hybrid option with the Altis 1.8HEV, priced at 870 million VND.

The Honda Civic’s current competitors include the Hyundai Elantra (from 579 million VND), Toyota Corolla Altis (from 725 million VND), Kia K3 (from 549 million VND), Mazda3 (from 579 million VND), and the MG5, which starts at 459 million VND.

BYD’s New Lineup

If BYD participates in VMS 2024, its booth is likely to feature three new electric vehicles: the BYD Han, BYD M6, and BYD Tang.

Among them, the BYD M6 is a pure electric MPV with overall dimensions quite similar to the Toyota Innova.

BYD M6 will be the next competitor to the Toyota Innova in the MPV segment.

In China, the BYD M6 is equipped with two front-wheel-drive electric motor options.

The standard model’s electric motor produces 163 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. The high-end version delivers 204 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.

The Blade battery pack, with a capacity of 55.4-71.8 kWh, enables the BYD M6 to travel up to 420-530 km on a single charge, depending on the variant.

The BYD Han is considered the flagship model of the Chinese automotive brand, positioned in the E-segment sedan category, which is larger than the BYD Seal currently available in Vietnam.

The BYD Han’s exterior design is noted for its resemblance to Porsche coupes.

The BYD Han will be present at VMS 2024 if the Chinese automaker participates.

The standard version of the BYD Han features a front-wheel-drive electric motor with a maximum range of 545 km.

The higher-end variant is equipped with two electric motors, producing a combined output of 510 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, along with a range of 605 km.

Additionally, BYD Tang is also a potential entrant to the Vietnamese market and may be introduced at VMS 2024.

Positioned between the D and E SUV segments in Vietnam, the BYD Tang is equipped with a 225-horsepower electric motor in the standard version, increasing to 241 horsepower in the higher-end variant. Both versions are front-wheel drive.

The BYD Tang features a 90.3 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 600 km.

The vehicle faces some controversies regarding its name change for the Vietnamese market. Its expected price of around 1.5 billion VND is also seen as a significant barrier, making it challenging to compete with rivals in the same segment.

Familiar Models

In addition to the new models set to debut at VMS 2024, the event will also showcase currently available automotive products from various brands.

Toyota is a pioneer in introducing a diverse range of hybrid vehicles in Vietnam, including the Toyota Innova Cross HEV, Toyota Yaris Cross HEV, Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8HEV, Toyota Camry 2.5HV, Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8HEV, and Toyota Alphard HEV.

Suzuki has recently introduced the hybrid version of the Suzuki XL7. The Japanese automaker also plans to bring the pure electric variant of the Swift to Vietnam, but it won’t be ready for VMS 2024.

MG launched the MG4 EV in June, and this model is likely to be present at VMS 2024. Meanwhile, Isuzu has stated that it does not plan to introduce an electric version of the D-Max pickup truck at this year’s exhibition.
