The second-generation Toyota GR86, which was introduced in 2021 and has only been on the market for three years, is already the subject of numerous rumors regarding a potential successor.

According to Carscoops, the next-generation Toyota GR86 may ditch the 2.4L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder boxer engine in favor of a 1.6L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, similar to the one found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

While the current-generation Toyota GR86 produces 228 horsepower, its siblings, the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, deliver an impressive 300 horsepower. Carscoops suggests that adopting a turbocharged engine for the GR86 could help close this gap and enhance its competitiveness.

Furthermore, Japan’s Best Car magazine reports that Toyota may also introduce a hybrid system for the new GR86, possibly similar to the one found in the recently unveiled Toyota 250 Series Land Cruiser Prado.

The next-generation Toyota GR86 is expected to produce more than 300 horsepower while retaining the 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions. The rear-wheel-drive system, a signature of the current model, is also likely to be carried over to the new GR86.

In November 2023, Japanese sources revealed that the next-generation Toyota GR86 would not share a platform with the Subaru BRZ, opting instead for a shortened version of the Lexus IS platform.

Carscoops speculates that the combination of a turbocharged engine, a hybrid system, and a new platform could elevate the Toyota GR86 to a more appealing position in the compact sports car segment.

It is important to note that Toyota has not officially confirmed any details regarding the next-generation GR86. Therefore, the information presented above remains speculative and should be treated as rumors until further announcements from Toyota.
