Electric Vehicle Sales and the Rise of Chinese Automakers: A Global Perspective

According to statistics, global sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles are on a promising upward trajectory.

In October alone, the sales of these two vehicle types globally increased by 50,000 units compared to September, reaching a remarkable 1.7 million.

Experts attribute this impressive growth largely to the performance of Chinese automakers, who have been pivotal in driving this shift.

As of the end of October, China maintained its leading position in the market, selling a total of 1.2 million pure electric and PHEV vehicles, reflecting a significant over 50% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Rho Motion’s data compilation reveals that China has sold approximately 8.4 million electric vehicles so far this year, marking a 38% increase from 2023.

In contrast, the North American market, including the US and Canada, witnessed electric and PHEV sales of 1.4 million vehicles during the first ten months of 2024, a modest 9% increase year-over-year.

The European market also experienced a 1% increase in sales of pure electric and PHEV vehicles, totaling over 260,000 units.

Within Europe, the UK saw a 14% rise in sales of pure electric and PHEV vehicles over the past ten months, while Portugal and Denmark recorded increases of 11% and 31%, respectively, compared to the previous year.

In Vietnam, focusing solely on pure electric vehicles, VinFast’s cumulative sales for the first ten months of 2024 reached 51,000 units, with 11,000 of those delivered to Vietnamese customers in October alone.

This achievement propelled VinFast to become the best-selling automotive brand in Vietnam, surpassing even established Japanese and Korean automakers.

Currently, VinFast customers enjoy a range of attractive incentives, including a 100% registration fee waiver and complimentary charging, which are expected to further bolster the brand’s sales performance in the remaining months of the year.
