Road Safety: Addressing the Rising Trend of Speeding and Illegal Racing
There has been an alarming increase in traffic accidents, with speeding and illegal racing being the predominant causes.
According to reports, in 2023, Germany witnessed a staggering 6,187 cases of alleged illegal car racing, marking a 10.3% increase from the previous year. Berlin alone accounted for 593 of these incidents.
This translates to nearly two illegal races occurring daily in the German capital, excluding those that go undetected.
These illegal races are predominantly perpetrated by males under the age of 25. Despite the implementation of various penalties and deterrents, this trend persists unabated in Germany.
Recently, GS.TS Andreas Knie, a transport expert at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), proposed denying driver’s licenses to males under the age of 26. His rationale is that individuals above 26 are generally more mature, sensible, and less prone to engaging in thrill-seeking behaviors like racing.
While Dr. Knie acknowledges that the law may not entirely prohibit those under 26 from driving, he suggests implementing regulations that restrict them to lighter or lower-performance vehicles.
Alternatively, he proposes issuing a two-year provisional license to this age group, followed by a review—if they maintain a clean driving record, a full license can be granted.
Additionally, Dr. Knie advocates for stricter penalties for these offenders to curb the prevalence of illegal racing.
