Lamborghini remains steadfast in its electrification plans, as stated by Stephan Winkelmann, despite other luxury car brands retreating from their promises due to the global downturn in the electric car market.
Stephan Winkelmann assured reporters that the company’s fourth model, an electric crossover previewed by the 2023 Lanzador concept, is on course for a release before the decade’s end. He added that the end of the decade is still some way off, allowing the company some flexibility.
“We have enough time to decide whether to speed up or delay the introduction of electric cars,” he told Autocar magazine. “So far, Lamborghini hasn’t thought about delaying anything. We want to have our first electric car by the end of the decade, and that’s what we’ll continue to push for because we’ve said it has to be a fourth model.””
All three of Lamborghini’s current models—the Urus SUV and the Temerario and Revuelto supercars—are now hybrid, a move that customers seem to have embraced. But the company has never committed to a firm date for phasing out its internal combustion engines, a decision that has proven prudent.
In contrast, rival brand Lotus has pledged to go all-electric by 2028, and Bentley has stated it will do the same by 2030. Both have announced significant changes to their plans this year, with Lotus revealing it is now investigating extended-range hybrids and Bentley pushing back its full electrification date to 2035.
Lamborghini’s sister brand, Porsche, has also scrapped its electrification strategy and acknowledged that it will redesign some electric cars currently in development to also offer hybrid powertrains to customers.
Lamborghini could benefit from this shift—the next-generation Urus, due in 2029, is expected to be electric-only, but we would be surprised if it didn’t also offer a combustion option (hybrid).
