The former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is preparing to auction an impressive collection of 69 historic F1 and Grand Prix cars valued at over $100 million.

F1 Tycoon Bernie Ecclestone Prepares to Auction Off His Massive F1 Car Collection

The British businessman has kept his collection away from prying eyes for decades, but before he passes away, he wants to know who will own these cars, rather than leaving the decision to his wife and children when he’s gone.

Ecclestone has appointed Tom Hartley Jnr to sell each of the race cars he owns. This is believed to be the finest collection of Grand Prix and F1 cars in the world, and some of the vehicles have been owned by the former CEO of the F1 racing series for over half a century. Many have also not been seen since he purchased them.

Of the 69 cars in the collection, 30 are Brabhams, as Ecclestone owned the Brabham F1 team from 1972 to 1988 and has owned at least one of the cars they built. This includes the 1981 car driven by Nelson Piquet and the Brabham BT46B Fan Car driven by Niki Lauda at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix.

Ecclestone’s collection also includes 17 iconic Ferraris. One of them is the Dino 246, which was raced by Phil Hill, Richie Ginther, Tony Brooks, and Wolfgang von Trips, before being driven to the championship win in 1958 by Mike Hawthorn.

The 94-year-old is also selling the Ferrari 375 F1 that Alberto Ascari drove at the Italian and German Grands Prix. This car is special because it was the first Ferrari to win an F1 race, and it has recently undergone a two-year restoration process.

A 2002 Ferrari F2002 driven by Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, which took three race wins, is also part of the collection.

I’ve been collecting these cars for over 50 years and only bought the very best of them,” Ecclestone shared. “While many other collectors in recent years have opted for hypercars and megacars, my passion has always been for Grand Prix and F1 cars. A Grand Prix and, especially, an F1 car is so much more important than any road car or any other type of race car because it is the pinnacle of the sport, and all the cars I’ve bought over the years have had fantastic racing histories and are rare works of art.”
