Consumer Reports’ 2025 rankings for the best car brands.
In a surprising turn of events, Subaru has taken the top spot in the 2025 rankings, surpassing well-known brands such as BMW, Lexus, and Porsche. This is the first time that the Japanese car brand has achieved this feat, with BMW holding the title for the previous two years.
Not only is Subaru the top brand in the market, but it also leads the way in Consumer Reports’ reliability rankings. With this impressive showing, Subaru has bested the usual leaders in this category, Toyota and Lexus.
Of course, Subaru is not the only Asian car brand to make it into the top 10. In fact, 7 out of the top 10 spots are held by Asian brands, including Subaru (1st), Lexus (3rd), Honda (5th), Kia (7th), Hyundai (8th), Toyota (9th), and Infiniti (10th).
On the other hand, German car brands occupy the remaining 3 spots in the top 10, with BMW (2nd), Porsche (4th), and Audi (6th). Notably, Mercedes-Benz did not make it into the top 10, ranking 23rd instead.
The absence of American car brands in the top 10 is evident. Most of the American brands are ranked relatively lower, such as Chrysler (16th), Tesla (18th), Ford (19th), Cadillac (21st), Lincoln (24th), Chevrolet (24th), Dodge (28th), GMC (29th), Rivian (31st), and Jeep (32nd).
According to Consumer Reports, the big three of the US automotive industry, Ford, GM, and Stellantis, are held back by their unreliable vehicles, particularly their popular models like the Ford F-150 Hybrid and F-150 Lightning, and the Chevrolet Blazer EV.
Meanwhile, Jeep continues its poor performance, ranking last for the second consecutive year. While Jeep’s vehicles are renowned for their masculine design and impressive off-road capabilities, they fall short when it comes to reliability and test drive scores.
Rivian, a young American electric car brand, ranks just above Jeep in 31st place. Similar to Jeep, Rivian struggles with vehicle reliability, despite exceeding customer expectations in other areas like comfort, fun-to-drive experience, cargo space, practicality, and ownership costs. Additionally, Rivian customers have faced long waits for vehicle delivery and difficulties scheduling repairs.
Commenting on the rankings, Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Auto Testing for Consumer Reports, told Auto News: “The more things change, the more they stay the same. When you look at manufacturers like Toyota and Subaru that really stick to their guns and change things gradually and have very competitive products, you see they’re doing quite well. Other automakers with big changes, like new platforms and powertrains, are the ones that are struggling with reliability.”
Out of the 32 brands ranked in 2025, Consumer Reports recommends buying any model from Porsche, Infiniti, Mini, and Buick. These brands have smaller lineups, which makes it easier to maintain high scores, according to the magazine.
On the other hand, there are 7 brands for which Consumer Reports does not recommend buying any model. These include Lincoln, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, GMC, Land Rover, Rivian, and Jeep. The magazine advises consumers to “proceed with caution when considering vehicles from these manufacturers.”
The 2025 brand rankings by Consumer Reports are based on evaluations of both new and used vehicles. The magazine takes into account key factors such as reliability, owner satisfaction, maintenance costs, safety, and real-world performance for each model and manufacturer to provide the best choices for consumers.
