Lamborghini’s plans for its first electric vehicle have experienced a slight hiccup, but don’t fret just yet. The Lanzador, a concept EV unveiled in mid-2023, was initially slated for production in 2028. Now, according to the latest reports, the Italian marque has pushed that timeline to 2029.
The Lanzador is akin to a 21st-century Espada. It features 4 seats, 2 doors, and has no intentions of being a track weapon, favoring a more street-oriented experience. However, with indications that the EV market may be cooling off in regions like the US and Europe, even as it grows elsewhere, including China, Lamborghini is now projecting production “before the end of the decade” instead of 2028 as initially planned.
Back in November, CEO Stephan Winkelmann made it clear that Lamborghini is playing the long game. “We have enough time to decide whether we need to speed up or delay the introduction of an electric car,” he declared. “So far, Lamborghini has not thought of delaying anything, the first electric car will come at the end of the decade and this is what we will continue to push, because we have said that it must be a fourth model”.
While arch-rival Ferrari plans to launch its first EV as early as 2025, a full four years ahead of Lamborghini, Winkelmann remains unfazed. According to Reuters, he stated, “We don’t think that 2029 is late to have an electric car. We don’t think that, in our segment, the market will be ready in 2025 or 2026.”
Several high-performance EVs on the market today could potentially outpace the brand-new Temerario hybrid, which is no slouch itself.
However, Lamborghini will need to do more than just build an electric crossover that’s quick in a straight line to meet customer expectations. Above all, the brand is grappling with regulations that could accelerate or decelerate the demand for EVs within its product lineup.
