The Vietnam Motor Show 2024 (VMS 2024) auto-motorcycle exhibition coincided with the next wave of Chinese car arrivals.
Therefore, this year’s exhibition lacked luxury cars but was not short of brands from the billion-population country, from gasoline to hybrid and pure electric vehicles.
“First time seeing so many Chinese cars”
Present at the VMS 2024 exhibition, Duc Vuong (28 years old, Binh Tan district) was surprised at the number of Chinese car brands participating.
“This is the first time I’ve seen so many Chinese cars at a Vietnamese auto show,” Duc Vuong told Knowledge – Znews.
The indoor exhibition area of VMS 2024 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, consists of 2 zones A and B. In zone A, GAC is the only Chinese car brand present with a booth of similar size to many neighboring brands.
At its first participation in the exhibition, GAC brought two models currently on sale, the GAC M8 and GAC GS8, alongside the launch and announcement of the GAC M6 Pro price. All three GAC-branded vehicles are pure gasoline cars.
In zone B, the exhibition area of MG and BYD boasts the largest size at the exhibition.
MG brought a total of 10 different models, the most among the car brands attending VMS 2024.

A not-so-small number of visitors came to the VMS 2024 exhibition on the first day it opened its doors to the public. |
Among these, the MG Cyberster stands out in the vedette position, also being the model that the company has just announced a price of 3.2 billion VND for a limited number of 100 customers in Vietnam.
The MG booth also features a series of cars debuting to Vietnamese customers such as the G50 MPV, D90 E-size SUV, or the LS7 SUV of the IM brand under the SAIC group. In addition, visitors can still find a series of MG-branded cars currently on sale in Vietnam, including the MG5, MG7, MG ZS, MG HS, MG RX5, and MG4 EV.
BYD is a fellow Chinese brand and also a “neighbor” of MG at the VMS 2024 exhibition. The company is the world’s largest new energy vehicle manufacturer in the past year and aims to surpass Tesla in the pure electric car segment this year.
In its first participation in VMS like GAC, BYD chose to display 5 models currently sold in Vietnam, including the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Han, and M6, along with 2 EREV models from the Denza and YangWang sub-brands.
The 360-degree rotating performance of the YangWang U8 is one of the attractions in zone B of the SECC building.
YangWang U8 attracts quite a lot of visitors to VMS 2024 thanks to its “rotating” performance. |
In general, the majority of visitors believe that Chinese cars are gradually improving in quality, as reflected in their design, materials used, and equipped technology.
The prices of a few Chinese car models are also “appealing” to Vietnamese customers, but there are still many models with prices that are difficult to approach compared to the choices from Japanese, Korean car brands, and somewhere the concerns related to durability, brand value, or the level of commitment of the brand to the Vietnamese market.
Car brands join hands with distributors, planning to open factories
Within the framework of the VMS 2024 exhibition, SAIC Motor Vietnam – the distributor of the MG car brand in Vietnam – signed a strategic cooperation agreement with PTM under the HAXACO group.
At the signing ceremony, the two parties shared the content of the agreement, including expanding and upgrading the MG dealer system, promoting sales growth, developing services and strategic products, as well as comprehensive advertising and marketing strategies.
MG joins hands with HAXACO to expand its dealer network and develop products. |
In general, this agreement helps MG complete its dealer system with more than 40 locations nationwide at the moment, while also developing after-sales services and warranty policies.
Before the MG-HAXACO agreement, many Chinese car brands had joined hands with partners in Vietnam to open car assembly factories, reducing dependence on foreign sources.
Some recent agreements took place between Chery-Geleximco, Geely-Tasco, or according to information shared by Car News China, Great Wall Motors will also soon open an automobile assembly factory for the Haval and Tank brands in Vietnam.
GAC has no plans to assemble cars in Vietnam, while BYD is still open to the possibility of establishing a domestic assembly base.
BYD is still open to the possibility of opening a factory in Vietnam. |
In general, Chinese car brands are making efforts to affirm their long-term commitment to the Vietnamese market. The partnership with large distributors or plans to open factories are moves that show that the group of Chinese car brands is quite serious in this wave of attacks.
The reaction of visitors to Chinese cars at the VMS 2024 exhibition was relatively positive. However, the success of these brands in Vietnam will not be achieved overnight and will take time to prove.
Chinese cars still have a long way to go, but through VMS 2024, those who are still “unfamiliar” with this group of brands have had a better opportunity to get closer, learn and have more choices before buying a car.
