November 2024 saw a booming growth in the Vietnamese automotive market. However, the D-segment sedan market remained lackluster, with a steep decline in sales of the once-dominant Toyota Camry. Notably, no model in this segment managed to sell 100 units during the month.

D-Segment Sedan Sales for Nov ’24 (units)

Mazda6: 75 units sold

The significant decline of the Toyota Camry presented an opportunity for the Mazda6 to take the lead in the D-segment sedan market. Specifically, in November, Mazda sold 75 units of the Mazda6 in Vietnam, a modest 1.3% increase compared to the previous month.

Mazda6 – The Affordable and Attractive Choice

The Mazda6 is currently the most affordable D-segment sedan in Vietnam, with a price range of 779 to 914 million VND. This competitive pricing, coupled with the government’s 50% reduction in registration fees for domestically produced and assembled vehicles, made the Mazda6 an even more appealing choice during November 2024.

Beyond its attractive pricing, the Mazda6 also boasts a sleek design, a comfortable interior, and a decent range of convenience and safety features. However, its sales performance has been modest, partly due to a lack of significant updates in design and features, as well as the overall decline in the D-segment sedan market.

The Mazda6 is offered with two engine options in Vietnam. The first is the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine that produces 154 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. The second option is the more powerful 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G engine, delivering 188 horsepower and 252 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Kia K5: 36 units sold

Kia K5 witnessed a slight dip in sales during November 2024, with a 2.7% decrease to 36 units sold. Despite this, the K5 managed to secure the second position in the D-segment sedan market, outperforming the Toyota Camry. However, the overall sales volume of the K5 remains modest, and it continues to feature in the list of the 10 slowest-selling cars in the market for the month.

Kia K5 – Stylish and Well-Equipped

The Kia K5 is the second most affordable D-segment sedan in Vietnam, with a price range of 859 to 999 million VND. Similar to other Korean-made cars, the K5 stands out for its modern design and generous features.

Buyers of the K5 can expect a host of standard equipment, including LED lighting, power-adjustable front seats with memory function, a head-up display (HUD), a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a Bose sound system with 12 speakers, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, remote engine start, and wireless phone charging.

Under the hood, the Kia K5 offers two engine choices. The first is a 2.0-liter Nu MPI engine that produces 150 horsepower and 192 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second option is a more powerful 2.5-liter Theta-III GDi engine that generates 191 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Camry: 23 units sold

The Toyota Camry, typically a sales leader in the D-segment sedan market, found itself in the unusual position of third place for November 2024. Specifically, the Camry sold only 23 units during the month, a significant drop of 69.7%. However, this decline is attributed to Toyota’s efforts to clear out old inventory to make way for the new generation model.

Toyota Camry – New Generation, New Features

The new generation Toyota Camry, launched on December 16, 2024, comes with a host of standard features. These include LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, a digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display, a sunroof, a JBL sound system with 9 speakers, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-seat center armrest with an integrated touchscreen.

In terms of powertrain, the Toyota Camry 2025 offers two options. The first is a familiar 2.0-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 206 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The second option is a hybrid system, combining a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

Honda Accord: 10 units sold

The Honda Accord stood out as the D-segment sedan with the highest growth rate in November 2024, achieving a remarkable 150% increase in sales. However, with only 10 units sold, the Accord continues to struggle and remains on the list of the slowest-selling cars in the market.

Honda Accord – Struggling Despite Incentives

The Honda Accord faces challenges due to its high price, starting at 1.319 billion VND, and the lack of multiple trim options. Additionally, the model has not received significant updates in a while. Despite offering cash incentives of over 200 million VND for more than six months, Honda has been unable to boost the sales of the Accord.

The Honda Accord does have its strengths, including a spacious interior and a highly-regarded driving experience. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 188 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offers two driving modes: Eco and Sport.
