Toyota’s New Alphard and Vellfire MPVs: Now with a Plug-in Hybrid Option for Enhanced Fuel Efficiency.

Toyota has added a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant to its Alphard and Vellfire MPVs, offering an even more fuel-efficient option to customers. Introduced earlier this year, these luxurious people carriers now provide an alternative to the existing hybrid and turbocharged petrol models.

The new PHEV system combines a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine with two electric motors, delivering a total output of 302 horsepower. This setup enables the vehicles to travel up to 73 km purely on electric power, as per the WLTC test cycle in Europe. With a combined fuel consumption of just 16.7 km/liter (approx. 5.98 liters/100 km), the Alphard and Vellfire PHEV offer impressive efficiency for their size.

The Toyota Alphard PHEV boasts impressive fuel efficiency, consuming less than 6 liters of petrol per 100 km.

The PHEV models are equipped with a 51 Ah lithium-ion battery, strategically placed beneath the floor for a lower center of gravity. This battery can be charged using either a slow AC charger or a fast DC charger, the latter providing an 80% charge in just 38 minutes. Additionally, the vehicles feature a Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) system, allowing them to supply power to a household for up to 5.5 days when fully charged and with a full tank of petrol, assuming an average daily consumption of 10 kWh.

The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire PHEV are currently offered exclusively in the Executive Lounge trim, with a spacious 6-seat configuration. While the exterior design remains largely unchanged, the interior benefits from additional sound insulation, reducing noise and vibration for a more comfortable ride. The air conditioning system can also operate without the petrol engine running, a convenient feature for those waiting inside the vehicle.

The Toyota Alphard is now available with three engine options in the Japanese market.

Other unique features of the PHEV variants include 19-inch silver alloy wheels, a wood-trimmed steering wheel, and an Ultrasuede headliner. Toyota has also introduced Smooth Stop technology, which reduces the forward lurch often experienced during deceleration, enhancing passenger comfort. The PHEV models also come with a digital rearview mirror that displays footage from both the front and rear cameras, enhancing the driver’s field of vision.

For those seeking an even more luxurious experience, the Alphard is also available in a 4-seat Spacious Lounge variant, offering increased legroom and additional features such as headrest-mounted speakers, a clothes hanger, and a refrigerator. This variant provides a similar level of opulence to the Lexus LM but at a more accessible price point.

In the Japanese market, the Toyota Alphard PHEV is priced at 10.65 million Yen (approx. $80,500), while the Vellfire PHEV starts at 10.85 million Yen (approx. $82,000). These prices reflect the premium nature of these vehicles and their advanced technology.
