Tesla is recalling 694,304 vehicles over non-compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards in the US. The issue pertains to the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light not illuminating.
The TPMS is designed to alert drivers when one of their tires is underinflated. While that is standard, the warning is “not maintained between driving cycles.” This is a violation as the system “may not adequately warn the driver of a tire underinflation condition, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Tesla discovered the issue in November during routine compliance tests on non-US vehicles. This initiated an investigation, ultimately leading to the automaker finding that the problem could stem from a faulty software update. It “inadvertently reset the TPMS warning light when the vehicle is powered on or woken up from sleep between driving cycles.”
The recall affects 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles. Tesla has found one field report and 76 warranty claims related to the issue, but no injuries or accidents have occurred.
While this is a relatively small recall, it seems to be the seventh time the Cybertruck has been recalled this year. The pickup truck has previously been recalled for a range of issues, including loss of drive power, delayed rearview camera display, stuck accelerator pedals, and decorative components that may detach.
